Piston Rings

Usage:

Remove And Install Piston Rings

start by:

a) remove pistons

1. Use expander (A) to remove the three rings from the piston.

2. Clean the grooves in piston with groove cleaner (B).

3. Check the ring gap for each ring by installing the ring in the bottom (not worn part) of its respective cylinder liner. Use a thickness gauge to take the measurement. The ring gap for a 4.750 in. (120.65 mm) diameter liner will be:

TOP RING - .017 to .023 in.(0.4 to 0.5 mm)

INTERMEDIATE RING - .017 to .023 in. (0.4 to 0.5 mm)

OIL CONTROL RING - .013 to .023 in. (0.3 to 0.5 mm)

NOTE: The ring gap measurement will increase approximately .003 in. (0.076 mm) for each .001 in. (0.025 mm) increase in the diameter of liner over the 4.750 in. (120.65 mm) dimension.

4. Use ring expander (A) to install the oil control ring (3), intermediate ring (2), and top ring (1) on the piston. The intermediate ring and the top ring must be installed with the word "UP" on ring toward top of piston.

5. Use a thickness gauge to check the clearance between the rings and the grooves. The clearances for new parts must be as follows:

TOP RING - .0030 to .0044 in. (0.08 to 0.12 mm) Maximum permissible clearance with worn rings is .010 in. (0.26 mm).

INTERMEDIATE RING - .0025 to .0039 in. (0.06 to 0.10 mm)

OIL CONTROL RING - .0015 to .0033 in. (0.04 to 0.08 mm)

end by:

a) install pistons
