Improvements Made To Input Shaft Group{3303}

Usage:

7271 Marine Transmissions

Description of Change: Several improvements have been made to the parts in the input shaft group in 7271 Marine Transmissions. These are (see the illustration):

... A new shaft and flange with hardened splines.

... The splines on the shaft are machined with a very small helical angle to prevent movement between the shaft and flange.

... A thicker, hardened retainer plate is used on the end of the new shaft.

... One bolt is used to hold the retainer plate instead of three. A higher torque is used for the bolt.

These improvements were made to prevent fretting of the splines and a possible shaft failure.

Adaptable As: The new parts are shown in the chart and the illustration. They must all be used together and are direct replacements for the former parts. The new parts were first used on 7271 Transmissions with Serial Number 36W236. They are adaptable to all earlier 7271 Transmissions.

Installation

1. After the bearing cones are installed on the new shaft and are cool, use a force of 216 to 234 kN (24 to 26 tons) to put the cones in the exact position (seating the cones).

2. Then, put anti-seize compound on the shaft splines. Use a 1F9540 Hydraulic Cylinder to push the new flange on the new shaft. Be sure the flange makes contact with the bearings before the retainer plate bolt is tightened.

3. Tighten the bolt in the retainer plate to 1000 N·m (740 lb ft). No washer is used.
