NOTICE |
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
|
- Check all parts of the main hydraulic pump and all parts of the pump drive coupling for damage or wear. Replace any worn parts or any damaged parts with new parts.
- Replace all O-ring seals with new O-ring seals.
- Use the following procedure in order to assemble the coupling assembly.

- Make sure that the splined shaft of the main hydraulic pump is clean and free of dirt and debris. Apply a thin coat of 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease to the splined shaft.
- Install coupling assembly (36) on the splined shaft of the main hydraulic pump. Install the coupling assembly until the coupling assembly is even with the end of the shaft. Use a soft faced hammer to locate the coupling assembly on the splined shaft, if necessary. Use a straight edge to make sure that the end of the coupling assembly is even with the end of the splined shaft. Tighten two screws (35) to a torque of 107 ± 10 N·m (80 ± 7 lb ft).

NOTICE |
To avoid system damage, make sure that the hydraulic pump is properly filled with hydraulic oil before start-up. |
|
- Fill the main hydraulic pump with clean hydraulic oil before operation. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" for the correct filling procedure and the correct level for the hydraulic oil system.
- Purge the air from the main hydraulic pump in order to prevent component damage. Use the following procedure to purge the air from the main hydraulic pump.

Illustration 20 | g00368772 |
The arrow shows the plug for the air vent. |
- Remove the plug for the air vent from the main hydraulic pump. Remove the plug before the engine is started.
- Add clean hydraulic oil to the pump through the opening for the plug. Install the plug for the air vent when the pump is filled with oil.
- Start the engine.
- Slowly loosen the filler cap on the hydraulic oil tank. Run the engine at low idle speed. Fully raise the boom. Hold the boom in the raised position.

This is the position of the machine before purging air from the hydraulic system. |
- Tighten the filler cap on the hydraulic oil tank. Place the stick in a vertical position. Slowly lower the boom until the bucket makes contact with the ground. Stop the engine. This will pressurize the hydraulic oil tank.
- Slowly loosen the plug for the air vent on the main hydraulic pump. Loosen the plug for several full turns until oil starts to flow around the plug. This indicates that air has been purged from the main hydraulic pump. Tighten the plug for the air vent on the main hydraulic pump.
- Close the access door to the main hydraulic pump.
- Start the engine and operate the engine at idle speed with no load for five minutes.
- Operate the control levers in order to allow the hydraulic oil to circulate throughout the hydraulic system. With the stick in a vertical position, lower the bucket to the ground. Stop the engine.
