Start By:

  1. Remove the swing drive. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Swing Drive - Remove" in this manual.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Weight of the swing drive is 341 kg (750 lb).

  1. Remove plugs (1) from cover (2) .

  1. Remove bolts (5) and washers from swing drive (4) .

  1. Attach Tool (A) and a suitable lifting device to cover (2). Carefully remove the cover from swing drive (4) .

  1. Remove sun gear (7) from planetary carrier (6) .

  1. Remove spacer (8) from inside planetary carrier (6) .

  1. Attach lifting straps and a suitable hoist to planetary carrier (6) .

  1. Carefully remove the planetary carrier (6) from ring gear (9) .

  1. Use a hammer and a drift to drive pin (10) in the shaft of carrier (6) .

  1. Remove shaft (14), gear (13), and washers (11) from the planetary carrier.

  1. Remove bearing (12) from gear (13) .

  1. Remove pin (10) from shaft (14) .

  1. Repeat Steps 9 thorough 12 on remaining two planetary gears of the planetary carrier.

  1. Remove retaining ring (15) and gear (16) from planetary carrier (6) .

  1. Remove retainer ring (17) from gear (16) .

  1. Install three bolts (5) and washers in ring gear (9) and swing drive (4). Tighten the bolts hand tight.

  1. Place swing drive (4) in a horizontal position. Use a hammer and a chisel to separate ring gear (9) from the swing drive.

  1. Remove bolts (5) and ring gear (9) from the swing drive.

  1. Remove spacer (18) from planetary carrier assembly (19) .

  1. Use a lifting strap and a suitable hoist to remove planetary carrier assembly (19) from swing drive (4) .

  1. Use a hammer and a drift to drive pin (20) into shaft (21) of planetary carrier assembly (19) .

  1. Remove shaft (21), gear (24), and washers (22) from the planetary carrier assembly.

  1. Remove two bearings (23) from gear (24) .

  1. Remove pin (20) from shaft (21) .

  1. Repeat Steps 21 through 24 on three remaining planetary gear assemblies.

  1. Use Tool (C) to remove retaining ring (25) from shaft (26) and the swing drive.

  1. Place swing drive (4) sideways. Remove four bolts (27) and the washers from cage (28) .

  1. Position swing drive (4) in a press. Support the swing drive on the face of cage (28). Install the supports under the cage next to shaft (26) .

  1. Use Tool (E) and the press to push shaft (26) from the swing drive.

  1. Place swing drive (4) sideways. Remove the remaining six bolts (27) and washers from the swing drive. Remove cage assembly (28) from the swing drive.

  1. Remove two lip type seals (32) and O-ring seal (33) from cage (28) .

    Note: Separate weight of swing drive (4) is 96 kg (210 lb). The separate weight of bearing (31) is 30 kg (65 lb).

    Note: Use care when components are pushed from the swing drive housing. Avoid injury to personnel. Also, avoid damage to components.

  1. Place swing drive (4) in a press. Use Tool (E) to push bearing (29), spacer (30), and bearing (31) from the swing drive.
