Start By:

  1. Remove the final drive sprocket. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive Sprocket - Remove and Install" in this manual.
  2. Remove the travel motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Travel Motor - Remove" in this manual.

Note: The final drive sprocket does not need to be removed prior to removal of the final drive. If the final drive is going to be disassembled, the sprocket should be removed.

Note: The procedure to remove the right hand final drive and the procedure to remove the left hand final drive is identical. The procedure that follows is for one of the final drives.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Attach two lifting straps and a hoist to final drive (1), as shown. It may be necessary to adjust the lifting straps for correct balance of the final drive.

    Note: Mark the location of mounting bolt holes (a) for the travel motor for installation purposes.

  1. Use Tooling (A) to remove bolts (2) and the washers that hold the final drive to the track roller frame assembly. Carefully remove the final drive. The approximate weight of the final drive is 812 kg (1790 lb).

    Note: The weight of the final drive must be adjusted if any of the components are being removed with the final drive.
