Start By:
- Remove the bucket. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Bucket - Remove" in this manual.
- Place the machine onto a hard level surface. Completely retract the stick.
- Place wood blocks in front of each track assembly and behind each track assembly.

- Position drain plug (2) for each final drive in the position that is shown. Drain the oil from each final drive into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of each final drive is 15 L (4 US gal).
Illustration 2 | g00570105 |
- Remove two bolts (1) and the washers from the final drive.
- Install Tool (A) in place of two bolts (1), as shown. The threaded rods will keep the ring gear and the carrier assemblies positioned, when cover (4) is removed.
- Remove remaining bolts (3) that hold cover (4) in position.
- It may be necessary to use a soft faced hammer in order to break the seal between the cover and the ring gear of the final drive. Use two persons, and slide cover (4) onto the threaded rods.
- Remove socket head bolts (5) and ring gear (6) from cover (4). Reinstall cover (4) without ring gear (6) .

- Repeat Steps 3 through 8 for the other final drive.
- Remove the right hand boom cylinder from the machine.
Reference: Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Boom Cylinder - Remove" in this manual.
- Start the machine. Position the end of the stick so the distance between the end of the stick and the floor is the same distance between the floor and the bottom of the counterweight.

- Adjust the length of Tooling (B), and install it in place of the right hand boom cylinder. Be sure to use six bolts, six washers, and six nuts in order to hold Tooling (B) together.
- Use Tool (C) to loosen bolts (7), but do not remove all the bolts that hold the upper structure to the undercarriage frame assembly.
Illustration 5 | g00570054 |
- Install Tool (D) in place of two mount bolts (7) in the front of the machine and the rear of the machine.
Note: Use the access hole (X) in order to install Tool (D) .

(X) Access hole |
- Reinstall bucket pin (8) in the stick, as shown. Be sure to position the bucket pin in the center of the stick.
Illustration 7 | g00570703 |
- Install Tooling (E) under the bucket pin on each side, as shown.
- Install Tooling (F) under the main frame at the rear of the machine, as shown.
Illustration 8 | g00570711 |
- Remove all bolts (7) that hold the upper structure to the undercarriage frame assembly.
- Release the hydraulic system pressure.
Reference: Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release" in this manual.
- Drain the oil from the hydraulic oil tank into a suitable container for storage or disposal.
Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" for the capacity of the hydraulic oil tank.
- Remove six bolts (10) and washers from the middle cover assembly (9). Remove middle cover assembly (9) .
Illustration 9 | g00569898 |
- Remove six bolts (11) and washers from cover assemblies (12). Remove cover assemblies (12) .
- Disconnect two hose assemblies (16) from the swivel assembly.
Illustration 10 | g00569854 |
- Disconnect two hose assemblies (13) from the swivel assembly. Remove fitting (14) in order to create extra clearance for removing the upper frame from the undercarriage of the machine.
- Disconnect four hose assemblies (15) from the swivel assembly.
- Remove five bolts (17) and the washers that secure the swivel assembly to the undercarriage of the machine.
Illustration 11 | g00613178 |
- Disconnect two lubrication tube assemblies (18) from the block at the front of the upper structure.
Illustration 12 | g00569912 |
- Carefully, raise upper structure (18) from the undercarriage frame assembly with Tooling (E) and (F) in 6.4 mm (0.25 inch). Raise the upper structure until pinion shafts (19) of the swing drives are clear of swing gear and bearing (20). The weight of the upper structure is approximately 34000 kg (74957 lb) to 38500 kg (84877 lb).
Illustration 13 | g00570747 |
Typical example |
Note: It is important to keep the upper structure level when the upper structure is being removed or installed from the undercarriage frame assembly. If the upper structure is not kept level, binding of pinion shaft (19) in the swing drive with swing gear and bearing (20) will result. The clearance between the gears is minimal.
Note: The weight of the upper structure and undercarriage frame assembly will vary depending on the attachments. The weights which are listed below are only approximate weights.
- Check the clearance between the pinion shafts of the swing drives and the swing gear and bearing. Make sure that the components will not interfere with each other during the removal of the undercarriage frame assembly.
Illustration 14 | g00570712 |
- Remove the wood blocks from the front and rear of the track assemblies.
- Fasten Tooling (G) and a chain to the undercarriage frame assembly, as shown. Use a lift truck and slowly pull undercarriage frame assembly (21) away from the upper structure. The weight of the undercarriage frame is approximately 22800 kg (50265 lb) to 24500 kg (54013 lb).
- If the undercarriage frame is going to be serviced, use wood blocks to support the upper structure of the machine. Support the upper structure under the main frame and under the subframe.
