  1. Remove the primary filter element from the air cleaner housing.

  1. Clean the air cleaner cover and the inside of the air cleaner housing.

    NOTICE

Do not clean the filter elements by bumping or tapping them. Do not use filter elements with damaged pleats, gaskets or seals. Engine damage can result.

Make sure the cleaned filter elements are completely dry before installing into the filter housing. Water remaining in the elements can cause false indications of contamination in Scheduled Oil Sampling test results.

  1. Clean the primary filter. Inspect the primary filter.

Primary filter elements can be cleaned with low-pressure air. Caterpillar does not recommend cleaning the air filter.

Refer to Operation and Maintenance, "General Hazard Information" before you use pressure air in order to clean the primary filter element.

  1. Direct air along the pleats inside the primary filter element and outside the primary filter element. Do not touch pleats with the air nozzle.

  1. Inspect the primary filter element after the element is clean. Do not use a primary filter element with damaged pleats, damaged gaskets, or damaged seals.

  1. Encase the clean primary filter element and store the clean primary filter element in a clean, dry place.

  1. Install the clean primary filter.

  1. Install the air cleaner cover and close the latches securely.

Note: Replace the primary filter if the primary filter has been in service for one year.

  1. Close the engine air filter access panel and the left side engine access panel.
