Parking Brake

Usage:

Remove And Install Parking Brake Caliper

NOTE: If the parking brake is ever used to stop the machine, the brake pads will become worn. To maintain the proper braking force, adjust the caliper as follows:

a. Release the brake.

b. Adjust the space between the pads and the rotor by turning retaining cap (1). The space should be 0.5 mm (0.02 in).

1. Park the machine and set the parking brake. Shut off the engine and block the wheels on a hard level surface to prevent movement.

NOTE: The pressure on the brake pads may be released with hydraulic pressure (Steps 2 and 3) or manually (Step 4) if a hand pump and gauge are not available. If Step 4 is performed, it will be necessary to readjust the caliper (See Step 7 to readjust the caliper).

2. Disconnect the brake line to the caliper and attach a hand pump with a 21,000 kPa (3000 psi) pressure gauge to the caliper.

NOTICE

Do not apply more than 21,000 kPa (3000 psi) in the following step. Use only enough pressure to release the pads.

3. Apply enough pressure to the hand pump to release the pads from the rotor.

4. Tighten two nuts against washers until spring cap is loose and turns. Continue turning the nuts and cap until the brake is released.

5. Remove the two bolts holding the caliper to the bracket.

6. Remove the caliper and slowly release the pressure to the caliper.

NOTE: To install the parking brake caliper, reverse the removal steps.

7. Perform the following steps for caliper and pad adjustment.

a. Spring caps (1) must be fully engaged in the housing before pressure is applied.

b. Apply pressure to the caliper and turn nuts (3) against washers (2).

c. Release the pressure and turn in spring caps (1) until the total clearance between the rotor and linings is 0.5 mm (0.02 in).

d. Apply pressure to the caliper, back up nuts (3) and lock with the lock pins.

Remove And Install Parking Brake Pads

1. Park the machine and engage the parking brake. Stop the engine and block the wheels on a hard, level suface to prevent any movement of the machine.

NOTE: The pressure on the brake pads may be released with hydraulic pressure (Steps 2 and 3) or manually (Step 4) if a hand pump and gauge are not available. If Step 4 is performed, it will be necessary to readjust the caliper (See Step 11 to readjust the caliper).

2. Disconnect the brake line to the caliper and attach a hand pump with a 21,000 kPa (3000 psi) pressure gauge to the caliper.

NOTICE

Do not apply more than 21,000 kPa (3000 psi) in the following step. Use only enough pressure to release the pads.

3. Pressurize the hand pump to release the pads from the rotor.

4. Tighten two nuts (3) against washers (2) until spring cap (1) is loose and turns. Continue turning the nuts and cap until the brake is released.

5. Remove one of the two bolts holding the caliper to the bracket and loosen the other so the caliper may be swung away from the rotor.

6. Slowly release the pressure to the caliper for full extension of the piston and maximum access to the lining.

7. Pry the pad from the holder. Apply pressure to the caliper as needed to remove the pad.

NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the parking brake pads.

NOTE: Always replace pads as a set with the same type of friction material as the old set.

8. Install the new pads into the holders. Make sure the anti-rotation pins line up for proper positioning.

9. Apply pressure to the caliper as needed to position the caliper on the rotor. Connect the brake line to the caliper.

10. Apply the brakes several times to seat the new pads.

11. Perform the following steps for caliper and pad adjustment:

a. The spring caps must be fully engaged in the housing before pressure is applied.

b. Apply pressure to the caliper and turn the nuts against the washers.

c. Release the pressure and turn in the spring caps until the total clearance between the rotor and linings is 0.5 mm (0.02 in).

d. Apply pressure to the caliper, back up the nuts and lock with the lock pins.

Disassemble And Assemble Parking Brake Caliper

Start By:

a. remove brake caliper

b. remove brake pads

1. Apply pressure to the caliper and remove lock pin (9) and nut (1).

2. Remove washer (2) and screw spring cap (3) out. Remove washers (4).

3. Pull stud (10) and piston (11) out. Screw the stud out of the piston.

4. Remove back-up rings (7) & (12) and seals (5) & (6) from the piston.

NOTE: To assemble parking brake caliper, reverse the disassembly steps.

5. Bleed the air from the brake line and adjust the caliper as follows:

a. The spring caps must be fully engaged in the housing before pressure is applied.

b. Apply pressure to the caliper and tighten the nuts against the washers.

c. Release the pressure and turn in the spring caps until the total clearance between the rotor and linings is 0.5 mm (0.02 in).

d. Apply pressure to the caliper, back up the nuts and lock with the lock pins.

End By:

a. install brake pads

b. install brake caliper
