CS-551 VIBRATORY COMPACTOR VEHICLE SYSTEMS Caterpillar

Vibratory Motor

Usage:

Remove And Install Vibratory Motor

------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil tank is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. Remove the fill plug only when the engine is stopped, and when the fill plug is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

--------WARNING!------

NOTE: Identify all hydraulic lines as they are removed for reinstallation purposes. Cap and plug all lines and fittings to prevent any contaminants from entering the hydraulic system.

1. Remove three hydraulic lines (1).

2. Remove four nuts (2) and remove the motor.

NOTE: To install the vibratory motor, reverse the removal steps.

Disassemble And Assemble Vibratory Motor

Start By:

a. remove vibratory motor

1. Remove four bolts (1) and port end cover (2).

2. Remove thrust plate (3).

NOTE: Discard the seals in thrust plate (3). New seals must be used on assembly and trimmed to fit the thrust plate.

3. Remove two bearings (4).

4. Remove gear set (5) and housing (6).

5. Remove seal (7) from both sides of housing (6).

6. Remove thrust plate (8) from the shaft end cover.

NOTE: Discard the seals in thrust plate (8). New seals must be used on assembly and trimmed to fit the thrust plate.

7. Using tool (B), unscrew retainer (9) and remove shaft assembly (10).

8. Using tool (A), remove retaining ring (16).

9. Remove washer (15), bearing cone (14) and bearing cup (13).

10. Remove retainer (12). Remove seal (17) from retainer (12).

11. Remove bearings (18) and the spring and the bushing under the top bearing.

12. Use a screwdriver to screw check valves (19) out.

NOTE: The following steps are for assembly of the vibratory motor.

13. Reverse disassembly Steps 1 through 12. Tighten the bolts in the port end cover to a torque of 270 N·m (200 lb ft).

14. After assembly, rotate the shaft with a 150 mm (6 in) wrench. The shaft should rotate easily with no binding.

15. Set bearing preload and running clearance for the motor as follows:

a. Turn retaining ring (9) at the shaft end of the motor with tooling (B) until it is tight.

b. Scribe a line across the face of the retaining ring onto the flange of shaft end cover.

c. Back retaining ring (9) off 12.7 mm (.50 in), measuring from the scribed line at the outside edge of the retaining ring. This will create the correct bearing preload inside the motor.

d. Stake the outer edge of the retaining ring into the groove at the inside diameter of the shaft end cover. Make sure the retaining ring is securely locked in this position.

NOTE: The motor should be run with system hydraulic fluid under no-load condition for about 5 minutes before installing on the machine.

End By:

a. install vibratory motor
