Recently released track rollers and idlers for special applications use conventional Duo-cone seals and require different service procedures than standard rollers and idlers. Complete servicing instructions will be published as an Undercarriage Reconditioning Bulletin. Summarized in this article are the highlights of servicing these components.

Disassembly

1. Loosen the bolts on the retainers.

2. Support roller/idler shell. Press the shaft in one direction to remove the collar from the shaft on one end. Then turn roller/idler over and press shaft from the other direction to remove the remaining collar.

3. Continue component disassembly in the same manner as a conventional roller/idler.

Assembly

Use Undercarriage Reconditioning Bulletin SEBF8515-03 as a general reference for assembly procedures. For installation of the Duo-cone seals in these rollers and idlers, use Undercarriage Reconditioning Bulletin SEHS8364 as a reference. Chart A lists the seal installation tools required for servicing the rollers and idlers.

Illustration 1.

Following installation of the shaft and retainer assemblies, the collar assemblies (A) need to be placed on the shaft and pressed into final location (Illustration 1). The collar will seat against a locator on the shaft but an assembly tool should be used to insure that the collar does not override this locator. The final assembly dimension (B) is given for each of the rollers in Chart B and idlers in Chart C.

Illustration 2.

A tool can be fabricated as shown in Illustration 2 to provide the proper final assembly dimension for the collars. This tool can be make from a common mild steel. Charts D and E summarize the suggested dimensions (C, D, E, F) for these tools.
