Left Cylinder Head Assembly

Usage:

Remove Left Cylinder Head Assembly

preparatory steps:

a) remove left camshaft housing

b) remove turbochargers

c) remove oil filter housing

1. Drain the cooling system. Drain the fuel filter housing.

2. Disconnect governor linkage from governor. Disconnect the safety shutoff control cable from lever. Remove the cable bracket and clip mounting bolts from channel assembly. Remove the governor control channel assembly.

3. Remove the four exhaust elbow bracket mounting bolts (2) from the left cylinder head. Loosen the four bracket mounting bolts (1) in right cylinder head. Remove the aftercooler water outlet elbow (3).

4. Remove the left air cleaner housing support bracket. Remove the exhaust manifold elbow (4). Remove engine lifting bracket (5) and plate.

5. Remove the governor-to-left cylinder head mounting bracket (6). Remove the oil line clamp and fuel line clamp mounting bolts (7). Remove gauge panel rear cover. Remove the four panel mounting bolts and lay the panel aside. Remove oil line junction block mounting bolt (8).

6. Disconnect wiring from sending unit (9). Remove fuel transfer pump fuel outlet line clamp (10) mounting bolt from engine front lifting bracket.

7. Disconnect all fuel lines from the fuel filter housing. Attach a hoist to filter housing, and remove the support bracket mounting bolts. Remove fuel filter housing - weight 130 lbs. (59 kg).

8. Remove the aftercooler vent lines. Remove aftercooler water inlet elbows (11). Remove water bypass line-to-regulator housing mounting bolts (12). Disconnect water lines (13) and (14) from lower housing (15). Attach a hoist and remove lower housing-to-cylinder head mounting bolts (16). Remove regulator housing - weight 100 lbs. (45 kg).

9. Remove the cylinder head retaining nuts and washers. Attach a hoist and remove the cylinder head assembly - weight 500 lbs. (227 kg).

NOTE: It is not necessary to remove spacer plate unless spacer plate gasket has been leaking or was damaged during removal of cylinder head assembly.

Install Left Cylinder Head Assembly

1. Clean the top surface of spacer plate and mating surface of cylinder head. Install the head gasket and water seals.

2. Attach a hoist and position the cylinder head assembly on engine. Coat the threads of retaining studs with 9M3710 Anti-Seize Compound. Install washers and retaining nuts. Tighten the nuts in following Step sequence:

1 Tighten all nuts in numerical sequence to 175 lb. ft. (24,2 mkg).

2 Retighten all nuts in numerical sequence to 250 lb. ft. (34,6 mkg).

3 Finally retighten all nuts by hand in numerical sequence to 250 lb. ft. (34,6 mkg).

3. Attach a hoist and position the water temperature regulator housing on engine. Install the two lower housing-to-cylinder head mounting bolts. connect the water lines to lower housing. Connect bypass line to regulator housing. Install aftercooler water inlet elbows. Install the aftercooler vent lines.

4. Attach a hoist and position the fuel filter housing on engine. Install support bracket mounting bolts. connect the fuel lines to fuel filter housing.

5. Install the fuel transfer pump fuel outlet line clamp mounting bolt. Connect wiring to water temperature shutoff sending unit. Install the gauge panel, mounting bolts, and rear cover. Install the oil line clamp and fuel line clamp mounting bolts. Install the oil junction block mounting bolt. Install the governor-to-left cylinder head mounting bracket.

6. Install the engine left lifting bracket and plate. Install exhaust manifold elbow. Install left air cleaner housing support bracket. Install left aftercooler water outlet elbow. Install and tighten the exhaust elbow bracket mounting bolts.

7. Install the governor channel assembly. Install bracket and clip mounting bolts. Connect cable to lever. Connect governor linkage.

8. Fill the cooling system.

concluding steps:

a) install oil filter housing

b) install turbochargers

c) install left camshaft housing
