Check Bore Length Of Gear And Sleeve Before Assembling In Transmission {3061}

Usage:

120 (10R, 22R);
140 (11R, 24R) Motor Graders

New 5D0924 Gears and/or 8D0531 Sleeves should be inspected for the correct difference between hub lengths before they are assembled in the transmission. The hub length of the 8D0531 Sleeve must extend 0.41-0.56 mm (.016-.022") beyond the hub of the 5D0924 Gear to ensure adequate lubrication between the gear and the sleeve. See Illustration.

Clearance required for adequate lubrication.

The minimum length of the extension is required to allow oil to enter the oil grooves in the outer diameter of the sleeve so the gear will turn freely on the sleeve. Inadequate lubrication can cause the gear to seize on the sleeve.

If the distance between the hubs is not within the recommended length shown in the illustration, material should be removed from either face of the 5D0924 Gear.

Other checks can be made during transmission assembly to be sure there is adequate oil supply. Make sure the oil passages in the shaft are open and clean. Also, be sure the 1.57 mm (.062") diameter orifice in the core plug at the end of the shaft is clear.

Another important check when assembling the transmission is to check the spacer length referenced in No. 120 And No. 140 Service Manual; Power Train Disassembly And Assembly; Form REG01269; Page 102, Step 1. The note should read:

NOTE: Spacer (3) is a two inch diameter standard black pipe (2 1/16" ID) 2.366 +.006-.020" long.
