Axle Propel Motor

Usage:

Remove & Install Axle Propel Motor

1. Remove eight bolts (1) and cover (2).

Screw and washer (3) is hidden behind the axle.

2. Remove screw and washer (3) and input gear (4).

3. Mark, disconnect and cap four hose assemblies (5).

4. Remove four screws (6) and separate and remove the axel propel motor from the engine.

NOTE: Install in reverse order.

Disassemble & Assemble Axle Propel Motor

Start By:

a. remove axle propel pump

1. Drain any oil remaining in the motor. Clean the outside of the motor thoroughly.

2. Put tape around the splined drive shaft to prevent damage the the drive shaft or seals during disassembly of the axle propel pump. For pumps with key (1) in the shaft, remove the key.

3. Tap cover (15) with a plastic hammer to release some of the pressure against snap ring (7). Using tool (A), remove snap ring (7).

4. Using two screw drivers, remove front cover (15). Remove O-ring seal (16) and shims (20).

NOTE: Pump drive shaft seal (17) will be destroyed when removed from front cover (15).

5. Remove seal (17) from the front cover.

6. Turn the motor around. Put alignment marks on connection plate (5) and housing (3) for proper alignment at assembly.

7. Remove six bolts (6) and the washers.

8. Rotate rear cover plate (5) on the locating pin and remove it from the motor housing. Note the location of the locating pin and the locating pin hole.

9. Remove O-ring seal (4) from the motor housing.

10. Remove control plate (26) from the motor housing. Note the condition of the bronze surface on cylinder block (25) and the mating surface of control plate (26).

Typical Example

NOTICE

Use only a puller such as tooling (B) to remove the rotary group. Do not use a slide hammer type puller or damage to the motor may result.

11. Using tooling (B), remove rotary group (2) from housing (3). Make sure the cylinder block does not bind as it is pulled through the motor housing. Remove tooling (B).

12. Place the cylinder block and drive shaft assembly on blocks as illustrated.

13. Pull cylinder block (25) from the drive shaft and piston assembly.

The drive shaft and piston assembly consists of pistons (23) and (21), spring collar, four spring cups and shims (22), drive shaft (10), baring ring (8), bearing (9), disc (11), retainer plate (12), slotted nut (18) and bearing (19).

14. Remove four spring cups, collar and shims (22) from the center bore of cylinder block (25).

15. Position each piston (23) perpendicular to retaining plate (12) and remove them by pulling straight out. Repeat for all seven pistons (23). The center pin cannot be removed at this time.

NOTE: Indication of damage to the seven pistons requires replacement of the rotary group.

16. Check the seven pistons in the areas indicated by the arrows for scratches and pitting.

NOTE: The screws were installed with Thread Lock. Impact the screw heads first to break the seal.

17. Remove seven screws (13) that hold retainer plate (12) to the drive shaft assembly.

18. Remove retainer plate (12), ring (11) and center pin (21).

NOTE: Indication of damage to the piston requires replacement of the rotary group.

19. Check center pin (21) for scratches or pitting at the areas indicated by the arrows.

NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the axle propel pump.

NOTE: Inspect all parts for wear or damage. Replace as required.

NOTE: Make sure all parts are free of dirt or debris. Contaminants put into the system may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

20. Position drive shaft and bearing assembly (2) on wooden blocks. Install center pin (21), disc (11) and retainer plate (12).

21. Put 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer on seven screws (13) and allow them to dry. Put 9S3263 Thread Lock on the screws and install them loosely to hold retainer plate (12).

22. Install three pistons (23) and align the retainer plate. Tighten the screws and remove three pistons (23).

23. Install shims, spring collar and cup springs (22) in the proper order in the center pin bore of the cylinder block. A heavy grease may be used to hold them in position.

24. Put SAE 10W oil on seven pistons (23) and in the piston bores in the cylinder block. Install the seven pistons.

25. Put SAE 10W oil on the center pin and in the center pin bore of the cylinder block. Lay the cylinder block with the pistons in a horizontal position. Make sure shims, spring collar and cup springs (22) stay in the proper location when put in a horizontal position.

26. Align center pin (21) with its bore in the cylinder block and assemble the unit.

27. Holding the cylinder block assembly and the drive shaft assembly together, position them vertically on wooden blocks. Push each piston into a drive shaft socket through the retainer plate. An audible click is made when each piston is properly seated.

NOTICE

When all seven pistons are properly seated, the cylinder block will angle easily to one side. Do not force the cylinder block to angle or damage to the pistons may result.

28. Angle the cylinder block to one side.

29. Put the entire rotating group in a vice allowing clearance between drive shaft bearing (10) and the top of the motor housing when it is installed over the rotating group.

NOTICE

Do not force the motor housing onto the rotating group or the motor may be damaged. The assembly should be done in one smooth, easy movement. If the housing does not fit over the rotating group easily, the problem should be located and corrected before continuing assembly procedures.

30. Heat the motor housing (3) evenly to a temperature of 80°C (176°F). Lower the motor housing down over the rotating group and tilt it to clear the rotating group as it is assembled. Continue until the rotating group bottoms out in the motor housing. A small amount of tapping on the outside of the motor housing may be needed, but do not force the assembly together. Allow the motor housing to cool to room temperature before continuing assembly procedures.

31. Install seal (17) with an appropriate seal installer.

32. Install shims (20). Using 5P0960 Multipurpose Grease on O-ring seal (16), install the O-ring seal on the shim.

33. Using an appropriate seal guide over the drive shaft and tooling (B), put SAE 10W oil on the lip of lip-type seal (17) and install cover (15). It may be necessary to lightly tap the cover onto the motor housing.

34. Using tool (A), install snap ring (7)

35. Using tool (B), and pull the rotating group up against retaining ring (7). This puts the rotating group in the exact location within the housing. Remove tool (B).

36. Put 5P0960 Multipurpose Grease on O-ring seal (4) and install the seal.

37. Put clean SAE 10W oil on the bronze surface of control plate (26) and install it into the motor housing.

38. Align the locating pin on cover (5) with the single pin hole in control plate (26) and install the cover.

39. Align the marks on the cover and the housing and install six bolts (6). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 48 N·m (35 lb ft).

NOTICE

The motor must be filled with oil before installation or damage to the motor may result.
