Usage:
1. Loosen, but do not remove, lug nuts (1).
2. Lower the blade and block the tires. Using a jack, raise the machine until the tire is raised off of the ground. Place a jack stand under the frame as illustrated and lower the jack. Remove lug nuts (1) and tire (2).
3. Rotate the wheel so oil drain plug (3) is at the bottom of the wheel. Remove the oil drain plug and drain the oil.
4. Remove two socket head screws (4).
5. Pry planetary carrier housing (5) off of the hub. Remove the O-ring seal from the groove inside of the hub. A new O-ring seal must be used at assembly.
6. Using tool (D), remove three retaining rings (6).
7. Using tooling (A), remove three gear assemblies (7) from planet carrier housing (5).
8. Remove two retaining rings (8) and bearing (9) from three gear assemblies (7).
9. Remove retaining ring (10) and thrust washer (11) from planet carrier housing (5).
10. Remove the snap ring and stub shaft (12) from the axle housing.
11. Remove screws (13).
NOTE: Install two guide bolts long enough to allow the ring gear to be pulled off of the hub and prevent the ring gear from falling.
12. Install tooling (B) and two guide bolts. Remove the ring gear.
13. Remove the bearing by driving it off of the ring gear.
NOTE: Do not disassemble the ring gear further than removing the bearing cones. The ring gear is serviced as an assembly.
14. If it is necessary to remove the outer bearing cone, use a hammer and a drift for the removal. Locate a drift through the ring gear and drive out the bearing cone.
15. Install tooling (C) and separate hub (14) from the steering knuckle.
16. Remove rod wiper (15) and seal (16) from the inside of hub (14). Discard the seals. New seals must be used at assembly.
NOTE: Perform step 17 and 18 only if the bearings need replacing.
17. Pull the inner bearing cup and the outer bearing cup out of the hub.
18. Pull the axle shaft out of the housing. Pull the inner bearing cone off of the axle housing.
19. Split and remove bushing (17).
20. Repeat steps 1 through 20 for the opposite side.
NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the rear wheel assembly.
21. Install new bushing (17).
22. Install the axle shaft into the housing.
23. Heat the inner bearing cone to 80°C (175°F) and install it onto the axle housing.
(14) Hub, (X) Outer Bearing Cup, (Y) Inner Bearing Cup, (15) Seal and (16) Rod Wiper.
24. Press inner bearing cup (Y) and outer bearing cup (X) into place inside of the hub.
25. Install seal (16) and rod wiper (15) into the hub. Lightly coat the lips of the seals with clean grease.
26. Install the hub assembly against the hub carrier using a continuous rotation. Carefully install hub (14) onto the axle housing, taking care to avoid damage to the seals.
27. Heat the outer bearing cone to 80°C (175°F) and install it onto the hub.
28. Install the ring gear assembly inside hub (14) until contact is made.
29. Install screws into the ring gear and tighten to a torque of 90 N·m (65 lb ft).
30. Install stub shaft (12) into axle housing.
31. Assemble gear assembly (7), bearing (9) and two retaining rings (8) for each of the three gear assemblies.
32. Using the arrowheads, properly align and install the preheated planetary gears firmly against the shoulder.
33. Install retaining rings (8).
NOTE: Before installing thrust washer (11), the end play of the stub shaft must be determined.
34. To determine the correct thickness required for thrust washer (11), determine the end play of the stub shaft as follows:
a. Determine dimension "A" by measuring from the flange facing to the contact surface of the thrust washer. Example: A = 94.60 mm (3.724 in).
b. To determine dimension "B", push the stub shaft back firmly against the shoulder and measure from the flange facing to the stub shaft face. Example: B = 92.60 mm (3.645 in).
c. Subtract dimension "B" from dimension "A". Example: 94.60 - 92.60 = 2.00 mm (3.724 - 3.645 = 0.079 in).
d. In order to obtain an end play of 0.3 to 0.6 mm (0.0118 to 0.0236 in), (using the example), select a thrust washer thickness of 1.50 mm (0.0590 in).
35. Install the correct thickness thrust washer (11) and retaining ring (10).
36. Install a new O-ring seal into the hub groove.
37. Align the tapped holes in planet carrier (5) and install the planet carrier firmly against the shoulder.
38. Remove the drain plug if it has not been previously removed to avoid trapping air in the system. Install two screws (4). Tighten to a torque of 49 N·m (36 lb ft).
39. Repeat the assembly for the opposite final drive.
40. Fill the final drives with oil to the correct level. See the Lubrication & Maintenance Manual.
41. Install the tires.
