CB-414 VIBRATORY DRUM Caterpillar

Drum Assembly

Usage:

Remove Drum Assembly

NOTE: If it is not necessary to remove the drum support assembly (vibratory side) or disassemble the drum, there is no need to drain the drum reservoir.

1. Drain the drum reservoir using the following steps.

a. Move the machine until the drain/fill plug is in the six o'clock position.

b. Set an oil pan capable of holding 21.7 l. (5.75 gal.) under the drain plug.

c. Remove the drum reservoir drain/fill plug.

d. After the bearing lube has drained, install the drain plug.

2. Fasten the steering frame lock to prevent machine from turning.

3. Block the drums front and rear to prevent machine from rolling.

NOTICE

Make sure scraper is supported properly before moving.

------ WARNING! ------

Heavy component. Avoid possible injury. Do not move prior to securely attaching a proper lifting device.

--------WARNING!------

4. Support the scraper with a hoist and chain attached to the lifting eyes.

5. Remove the bolts, washers, and nuts securing scraper to yoke. Move scraper away from yoke.

6. Disconnect pressure, return, and case drain from the vibratory motor. Tag the hoses. Plug hose ends and cap fittings on the motor.

7. Rear drum disconnect steps:

a. Disconnect the two electrical wires from magnetic sensor of speedometer (if equipped). Mark wires for reassembly.

b. Disconnect actuator and mounting bracket from yoke.

NOTE: Do not disconnect actuator linkage from motor.

c. Disconnect pressure, return, and case drain hoses from the propel motor. Disconnect the pressure hose brake assembly. Tag the hoses. Plug hose ends and cap fittings on the motor and brake.

8. Front drum disconnect steps:

------ WARNING! ------

Heavy component. Avoid possible injury. Do not move prior to securely attaching a proper lifting device.

--------WARNING!------

a. Attach a hoist and chain to the drum drive motor.

b. Remove the four bolts and washers holding the drum drive motor in place. Remove the drum drive motor.

11. Use a four ton jack to raise the yoke on the vibratory side of the machine approximately 13 mm (.5 in.). This will relieve tension on the shock mounts.

12. Use another four ton jack to raise the yoke on the propel side of the machine approximately 13 mm (.5 in.). This will relieve tension on the shock mounts.

NOTICE

The nuts in step 13 should be replaced with new parts during reassembly.

13. Remove the bolts, washers, and nuts securing the drum to the vibratory side of the yoke. Raise or lower the jack slightly, if needed, to remove the bolts.

14. Remove the shims between the yoke support housing (22) on the propel side of the drum. If shims are wedged in too tightly to remove, make sure they will not cause any damage when the drum is removed.

NOTICE

Make certain there are no wires or hoses that could be damaged when moving the drum.

------ WARNING! ------

Use caution and blocking to make sure drum does not roll away. Damage to equipment or injury to personnel could result from a runaway drum.

--------WARNING!------

15. Use pry bars to carefully roll the drum out of the yoke.

16. After removal, block drum to prevent accidental rolling.

17. Support both sides of the yoke with blocks of hardwood or other suitable material. Remove the two jacks.

NOTICE

Make sure scraper is supported properly before moving.

------ WARNING! ------

Heavy component. Avoid possible injury. Do not move prior to securely attaching a proper lifting device.

--------WARNING!------

18. If necessary, the inside scraper may be removed. Support the scraper with a hoist.

19. Remove the bolts, washers, and nuts holding the scraper to the yoke.

20. Check the condition of the two rubber scraper blades (one located in front of the drum, and one located in the rear of the drum). Replace any blade that is worn out, fatigued, or torn.

Install Drum Assembly

1. If the rear scraper was removed when the drum was removed, install as follows:

------ WARNING! ------

Heavy component. Avoid possible injury. Do not move prior to securely attaching a proper lifting device.

--------WARNING!------

a. Attach a hoist and chain to the inside scraper assembly.

b. Move the scraper into place inside yoke with a hoist.

c. Fasten scraper to yoke with four bolts, washers, and nuts.

2. Set four ton jack under the yoke on the propel side. Set another four ton jack under the yoke on the vibratory side. Remove blocks.

3. Use pry bars to carefully roll the drum into the yoke.

4. Once the drum is in position rotate shock mount support (1) and support housing (22) to align bolt holes with bolt holes in yoke.

5. Install any shims found between the yoke and support mount during drum removal.

6. Install the bolts, washers, and nuts securing the drum to the vibratory side of the yoke. Raise or lower the jack slightly, if needed, to start the bolts.

------ WARNING! ------

Heavy component. Avoid possible injury. Do not move prior to securely attaching a proper lifting device.

--------WARNING!------

7. If replacing the front drum, attach a hoist and chain to the drum drive motor.

8. Using the hoist, move the front drum drive motor into position and secure with the bolts and washers.

9. If replacing the rear drum, reconnect the pressure, return, and case drain hoses to the propel motor. Reconnect the brake pressure hose to the brake.

10. Connect the two electrical wires to the magnetic sensor on the speedometer (if equipped).

11. Reconnect actuator and mounting bracket to the yoke.

12. Connect the pressure, return, and case drain hoses to the vibratory motor.

13. Lower both sides of the yoke.

------ WARNING! ------

Heavy component. Avoid possible injury. Do not move prior to securely attaching a proper lifting device.

--------WARNING!------

14. Support the scraper with a hoist and chain attached to the lifting eyes.

15. Using the hoist, move the scraper into position. Secure with the bolts, washers, and nuts.

16. Adjust the two scrapers as follows:

a. Loosen the bolts holding the scraper to the frame.

b. Adjust the angle of the scraper so that 13 mm (.5 in.) of the face of the scraper blade rests on the surface of the drum.

c. Tighten bolts.

d. If this adjustment does not bring the scraper blade close enough to the drum, loosen the bolts holding the scraper blade to the drum.

e. Move the scraper blade in or out until 13 mm (50 in.) of the face of the scraper blade rests on the surface of the drum.

f. Tighten bolts.

17. Place the steering frame lock in the stored position.

18. If the drum bearing lube was drained, refill using the following steps.

a. Move the machine until the leveling rods (1) are level with the top of the frame.

b. Add bearing lube to the drain/fill port (2) until bearing lube is centered in sight glass (3).

c. Install drain/fill plug (2).

d. If this adjustment does not bring the scraper blade close enough to the drum, loosen the bolts holding the scraper blade to the scraper.
