Refrigerant Compressor - Remove and Install

Usage:

D11R 7PZ

Removal Procedure

NOTICE

Effective July 1, 1992 regulations prohibit the venting of any refrigerant into the atmosphere. Refer to Caterpillar publications Service Manuals, SENR3334, SENR5664, and NEDG5065 for the proper procedure, the proper equipment, and the proper tools needed in order to reclaim refrigerant from any Caterpillar equipment.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from contact with refrigerant.

Contact with refrigerant can cause frost bite. Keep face and hands away to help prevent injury.

Protective goggles must always be worn when refrigerant lines are opened, even if the gauges indicate the system is empty of refrigerant.

Always use precaution when a fitting is removed. Slowly loosen the fitting. If the system is still under pressure, release it slowly in a well ventilated area.

Personal injury or death can result from inhaling refrigerant through a lit cigarette.

Inhaling air conditioner refrigerant gas through a lit cigarette or other smoking method or inhaling fumes released from a flame contacting air conditioner refrigerant gas, can cause bodily harm or death.

Do not smoke when servicing air conditioners or wherever refrigerant gas may be present.

Use a certified recovery and recycling cart to properly remove the refrigerant from the air conditioning system.

  1. Recover the air conditioner refrigerant from the air conditioner system. Refer to Service Manual, SENR5664, "Air Conditioning and Heating Systems with R-134a Refrigerant" for the correct procedure. Refer to Special Publication, NEDG5065, "Air Conditioning Tools" for the correct tools.

Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires, and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.

  1. Disconnect all wires from refrigerant compressor (1) .

  1. Loosen the nuts on belt tightener (3) until tension is off the refrigerant compressor belt. Remove the belt from the pulley. Remove bolt (2) and the washer from belt tightener (3). Move the belt tightener upward and position the belt tightener out of the way.

  1. Disconnect two refrigerant lines (4) from refrigerant compressor (1) .

  1. Support refrigerant compressor (1). Remove bolt (5) and the washers .

  1. Remove the refrigerant compressor.

Installation Procedure

    ------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result when charging an air conditioning system with a liquid.

The compressor will pump the refrigerant back into the charging cylinder with the possibility of rupturing (exploding) the cylinder.

Do not operate the engine when charging with a liquid.

Never charge liquid or gas through the discharge (high side of the system) with the engine running.

Keep all other personnel either away from the machine or where they can be seen when working on the air conditioning system.

  1. Install the refrigerant compressor.

  1. Install the washers and bolt (5) .

  1. Connect two refrigerant lines (4) to refrigerant compressor (1) .

  1. Position belt tightener (3). Install the washer and bolt (2) to belt tightener (3). Install the belt to the pulley.

  1. Adjust the nuts on the belt tightener. Tighten the belt tension to 534 ± 22 N (120 ± 5.0 lb) for a new belt. Tighten the belt tension to 400 ± 44 N (90 ± 10 lb) for a used belt.

  1. The belt tension can be measured by using a belt tension gauge. A Kent Moore Company belt tensioner can be used to measure the belt tension. The part number is BT-33-95.

  1. Connect all wires to refrigerant compressor (1) .

Note: Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for all fluid capacities and the proper filling procedures.
