Product Support Program For Replacing The Turbocharger Compressor Housing On Certain 950F Loaders Caterpillar

NOTE: This Program can be administered either before or after a failure. In either case the decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS4995" as the Part Number and "7755" as the Group Number. If administered before failure, use "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use " T" as the SIMS Description Code. If administered after failure, use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use " Z" as the SIMS Description Code.

NOTE: Although this Program is to be administered as described above on the Affected Product, parts should be removed from parts stock as soon as possible.

Problem

The 1005879 Compressor Housing of the 1005865 Turbocharger Group on certain 950F Loaders may have a metal burr inside of it that could become dislodged damaging the compressor wheel.

NOTE: Earlier 950F Loaders with serial number prefixes of 7ZF, 6YG, 4DJ, 6LJ, or 5PJ are also eligible for this program IF a 1005865 Turbocharger Assembly or a remanufactured 0R6599 Turbocharger Group with a package label date codes of 0493 (April 1993) or earlier was installed by the dealer.

NOTE: New 950F replacement engines with an engine arrangement number of 1007024 and an engine serial number of 98Z1-1732 are eligible for this program.

Parts Stock

On 1005865 Turbocharger Groups and remanufactured 0R6599 Turbocharger Groups in parts stock with package label date codes of 0493 (April 1993), replace the existing 1005879 Housing with a new 1005879 Housing. After replacing the 1005879 Housing, write the letters "DG" on the carton next to the package label to indicate that the rework has been performed.

NOTE: 1005865 Turbocharger Groups with package labels with date code of 0493 or earlier do not need to be reworked if the letters "DG" are written next to the label. 1005865 Turbocharger Assemblies that have been reworked at the factory also have a paint mark on the outside of the compressor outlet.

Affected Product

1. Check the turbocharger part number. Only 1005865 Turbocharger Groups are eligible for rework on this program. Do not remove the turbocharger from the engine.

2. Remove the air inlet hose and the compressor outlet hose from the turbocharger compressor. Inspect the blades of the compressor wheel. If the blades are damaged, replace the complete turbocharger with a new 1005865 Turbocharger Group. If the blades are not damaged, proceed to Step 3.

NOTE: If it is necessary to install a complete new 1005865 Turbocharger Group, also install a new 7C7431 Gasket (turbo mounting), 1S7057 Gasket (turbo oil supply), and 7W2398 Gasket (turbo oil drain).

3. Mark the position of the outlet of the compressor housing. The new housing must be installed in the same position.

4. Remove the bolts holding the aluminum compressor housing to the turbocharger center housing.

5. Remove the compressor housing carefully. Do not damage the blades of the compressor wheel.

6. Install the new 1005879 Housing. Be careful not to damage the blades of the compressor wheel. Be sure to align the compressor outlet in the same position as noted in Step 4.

7. Tighten housing bolts to 7.3 ±.5 N· m (65± 5 lb. in.).

8. After the new 1005879 Housing is installed, install the air hoses and clamps. Be sure the hoses and clamps are installed securely to prevent dirt entry.

Service Claim Allowances

Parts Stock

Submit one claim for all 1005865 Turbocharger Groups reworked in parts stock. Submit the claim for 1-1005879 Housing and .5 hour labor at your cost rate for each turbocharger reworked.

NOTE: U.S. and Canadian Dealers Only - When submitting a parts stock claim use 99Z00001 in the Product Identification Number Field.

Affected Product

NOTE: This is a 1-hour job. If a complete turbocharger replacement is needed, due to a damaged compressor wheel, the labor allowance is 2 hours.

Return all 1005879 Housings and 1005865 Turbocharger Groups (both those removed from parts stock and those removed from affected product) and a copy of the claim to:
