Crankshaft Main Bearings

Usage:

Remove And Install Crankshaft Main Bearings

preparatory step:

a) remove oil pump

1. Remove the No. 2 and No. 6 crankshaft main bearing caps.

2. Using tool (A), remove the upper halves of main bearings by rotating the crankshaft and rolling the bearing out of cylinder block. Remove lower halves of main bearings from the caps.

3. Lubricate the bearing surfaces of upper halves of main bearings with clean SAE 30 engine oil. Using tool (A), roll upper halves of main bearings into place.

4. Clean the main bearing caps, and install lower halves of bearings in caps.

5. Using wire (B), check the bearing clearance. Install caps and tighten both retaining bolts to 30 ± 3 lb. ft. (4,1 ± 0,4 mkg), mark both heads and bearing caps, then tighten each bolt an additional 90° from mark. Remove the bearing caps and measure thickness of wire. Main bearing clearance should be .0030-.0059 in. (0,076-0,150 mm).

6. Lubricate threads of cap retaining bolts, face of washers, and lower halves of main bearings with clean SAE 30 engine oil. Position caps on engine with number stamped on cap facing, the corresponding number stamped on face on left side of cylinder block. Install retaining bolts and washers. Tighten both bolts to 30 ± 3 lb. ft. (4,1 ± 0,4 mkg), mark both bolt heads and bearing caps, then tighten both bolts an additional 90° from mark

7. Remove the No. 1,3,4,5, and 7 main bearing caps. Remove the crankshaft thrust bearings (1). Lubricate the new thrust bearings with clean SAE 30 engine oil, and install them in cylinder block with groove in bearing toward crankshaft.

8. Repeat Step 2 through Step 6 for remaining bearings. Check crankshaft end play using indicator group (C). End play should be .0025 - .0145 in. (0,064 - 0,368 mm). Maximum permissible end play is .025 in. (0,64 mm).

concluding step:

a) install oil pump
