Flywheel

Usage:

Remove Flywheel

1. Remove the flywheel retaining bolts (1) and lock (2).

2. Remove the flywheel (3).

FLYWHEEL
1. Bolts (eight). 2. Lock. 3. Flywheel.

NOTE: Remove the oil pan, oil filter elements, and starter to mount engine on the OTC Model 1730-A Engine Stand shown.

Install Flywheel

1. Position the flywheel on the crankshaft so the paint mark, on earlier flywheels, or the stamped dash mark, on later flywheels, is aligned with the stamped mark on the crankshaft flange.

2. Coat the threads of the flywheel retaining bolts with 8H5137 Form-A-Gasket.

NOTE: It is imperative that the recommended thread sealant is used on these bolts. The tapped holes in the crankshaft flange for the flywheel retaining bolts are drilled through, making them open to the oil sump. Leakage in this area is often mistaken for rear seal leakage.

3. Install the retaining bolts and a new lock. The "V" cut on lock should align with the mark on flywheel.

NOTE: If flywheel had a lock, install a new lock. If flywheel did not have a lock, do not use a lock.

4. Tighten the retaining bolts to 60 ± 10 lb. ft. (8.3 ± 1.4 mkg) and bend the locking tabs.

NOTICE

When installing a new flywheel, check the thickness of the new flywheel, at the bolt holes, in relation to the thickness of the old flywheel. Install the correct length bolts to obtain full thread engagement in the crankshaft flange. Bolts that are too long will rub the block on back side of crankshaft flange and pull crankshaft back. This will cause the crankshaft thrust bearing to fail.
