Drum Weight assembly

Usage:

Remove And Install Drum Weight Assembly

Start By:

a. remove drum support, propel side

b. remove drum support, vibratory side

NOTICE

Thoroughly clean the drum assembly prior to removing the eccentric weight shaft. Any contamination in the drum will reduce the service life of the weight bearings.

1. Position the drum assembly with the vibratory side facing up.

2. Put an alignment mark on bearing housing (1) and the drum for assembly purposes. The bearing housing must be reinstalled in its original location in the drum.

3. Remove the eight nuts and washers that hold the bearing housing to the drum.

4. Install four 3/4"-10 NC bolts (2) that are approximately 76 mm (3.0 in) long into the blind holes in the bearing housing as shown. Alternately tighten bolts (2) to loosen the bearing housing from the drum.

NOTE: The eccentric weight shaft may come out of the drum with the bearing housing. To prevent this, push in on the end of the shaft while removing the bearing housing.

5. Fasten tool (A) and a hoist to bearing housing (1). Remove the bearing housing from the drum. Weight of the bearing housing is 101 kg (223 lb).

6. The eight studs which hold bearing housing (1) to the drum are pressed into the drum head. If necessary, remove the studs from the drum.

NOTICE

Do not hit the drum with the eccentric weight shaft during removal.

7. Fasten a hoist to eccentric weight shaft (3) as shown. Remove the shaft from the drum. Weight of the eccentric weight shaft is 101 kg (223 lb).

8. Remove screw (4) from the end of the eccentric weight shaft.

9. Remove retaining ring (7), five mounts (6) and washer (5) from the end of the eccentric weight shaft.

Vibratory Side Of Drum

Propel Side Of Drum

------ WARNING! ------

Lifting the drum assembly without using the correct link brackets and hoist can cause the drum assembly to spin and fall. This can result in equipment damage or personal injury. Before the drum assembly is moved, be sure the area around it is clear.

--------WARNING!------

10. Using tool (D) and (B), turn the drum assembly on its side; then, lift the drum assembly on end with the propel side facing up. Weight of a smooth drum is 1522 kg (3355 lb). Weight of a padded drum is 1781 kg (3927 lb).

11. Put an alignment mark on bearing housing (10) and the drum for assembly purposes. The bearing housing must be reinstalled in its original location in the drum.

12. Remove the eight nuts and washers that hold bearing housing (10) to the drum.

13. Install four 3/4-10 NC bolts (8) that are approximately 76 mm (3.0 in) long into the blind holes in the bearing housing as shown. Alternately tighten the bolts to loosen the bearing housing from the drum.

14. Remove the center plug from the bearing housing. Install a forged eyebolt (9) of the appropriate size in the bearing housing. Fasten a hoist to bearing housing (10), and remove it from the drum. Weight of the bearing housing is 101 kg (223 lb).

15. The eight studs, which hold bearing housing (10) to the drum, are pressed into the drum head. If necessary, remove the studs from the drum.

NOTE: Steps 16 through 20b are for the removal of the weight bearings from bearing housings (1) and (10).

16. Remove four bolts (11) and the washers that hold bearing retainer (12) in position. Remove the bearing retainer.

17. Rotate the inner race of the weight bearing by hand. The race should rotate smoothly with no indications of binding.

18. Check the bearing surfaces for scoring, gouging or other indications of damage.

19. Check the clearance between the bearing rollers and the outer race of weight bearing (13). Install a feeler gauge (14) between the bearing rollers and the outer race, all the way through the bearing. The maximum permissible clearance must not be more than .20 to .25 mm (.008 to .010 in).

20. If the bearing is damaged, or if the clearance exceeds the maximum, remove the weight bearing from the bearing housing as follows:

a. Use tool (C) to remove the weight bearing from the bearing housing.

b. If the bearing condition will not permit the use of tool (C) to remove the bearing as indicated in Step 20a, a torch may be used to cut the inner race, allowing removal of the inner race and bearings. Weld a bead around the center of the outer race. Pull the outer race out of the bearing housing.

NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the drum weight assembly.

NOTICE

The interior of the drum must be thoroughly clean. 1/64to 1/32 teaspoon of contamination is the maximum allowable for the entire drum assembly. Any contamination may damage drum components.

21. Thoroughly clean all parts of the internal drum prior to assembly.

NOTE: Steps 22 through 24 are for the installation of the weight bearing in bearing housings (1) and (10).

22. Be sure the metering hole in the bearing housing is clean and free of obstructions.

23. Heat the bearing housing to a maximum temperature of 82°C (180°F). Install weight bearing (13) in the bearing housing. If the bearing will not seat properly in the bearing housing, use a brass punch and hammer to seat the bearing. The brass punch should only be used against the outer bearing race. Allow the bearing housing to cool.

24. Install bearing retainer (12) with the grooved side facing toward the weight bearing. Put a thin coat of 9S3263 Thread Lock on the threads of bolts (11). Install the bolts to hold the bearing retainer.

25. Position the drum with the propel side facing up.

26. Thoroughly clean the mounting surface of bearing housing (10) and the propel side of the drum. Put a thin coat of 6V6640 Gasket Maker on the mounting surface of the bearing housing. Fasten a hoist to the bearing housing, and put it in its original position on the drum. Install the eight washers and nuts that hold it. Reinstall the plug in the center of the bearing housing.

------ WARNING! ------

Lifting the drum assembly without using the correct link brackets and hoist can cause the drum assembly to spin and fall. This can result in equipment damage or personal injury. Before the drum assembly is moved, be sure the area around it is clear.

--------WARNING!------

27. Using tool (D) and (B), turn the drum assembly on its side; then lift the drum assembly on end with the vibratory side facing up.

28. Install washer (5), five mounts (6) and retaining ring (7) in the end of the eccentric weight shaft. Install screw (4) in the opposite end of the eccentric weight shaft.

29. Fasten a hoist to eccentric weight shaft (3), and put it in position in the drum assembly. Be sure the eccentric weight shaft fits in the weight bearing at the propel side of the drum assembly.

30. Thoroughly clean the mounting surface of bearing housing (1) and the vibratory side of the drum. Put a thin coat of 6V6640 Gasket Maker on the mounting surface of the bearing housing. Fasten tool (A) and a hoist to the bearing housing, and put it in position on the drum. Install the eight washers and nuts that hold it.

End By:

a. install drum support, vibratory side

b. install drum support, propel side
