2. Put wood blocks in front of and behind the rear wheels to prevent the machine from rolling.

3. Support both sides of the yoke assembly at the front and rear with wood blocks or suitable jack stands.

4. Support the machine with wood blocks under the front portion of the frame and under the steer pivot housing portion of the yoke assembly as shown.

5. Put tool (A) under the rear of the frame as shown. Installation of tool (A) will keep the machine from tipping backward during removal of the yoke assembly.

6. Disconnect the steering frame lock link.

7. Fasten a hoist to the yoke assembly.

8. Disconnect both steering cylinders from the yoke assembly by removing bolt (1) and nut (2) from each steering cylinder.

9. Remove bolt (3) and nut (4) that hold each vertical pin in the frame.

10. Remove grease fitting (5) from each vertical pin.

NOTE: It may be necessary to move the steer pivot housing on the rear of the yoke assembly to allow easier removal of two vertical pins (6).

11. Put a small wood block between the steer pivot housing and the yoke at location (X). This will prevent side-to-side movement of the steer pivot housing when vertical pins (6) are removed. Use a hammer and a punch to remove two vertical pins (6) from the pivot joint.

12. Remove yoke assembly (7) from the rear frame. Weight of the yoke assembly is 794 kg (1750 lb).

13. Remove spacers (8) at the pivot joint.

NOTE: The following step is only for CS-433B Compactors.

14. Fasten a hoist to rear scraper assembly (9) as shown. Remove the four bolts, washers and nuts that hold the rear scraper assembly to the yoke assembly. Remove the rear scraper assembly. Weight of the rear scraper assembly is 125 kg (275 lb).

15. Remove eight bolts (10) and the washers that hold plate (11) to the pivot pin in the yoke and the steer pivot housing. Use two persons to remove plate (11). Weight of plate (11) is 41 kg (90 lb). Remove the shims from behind the plate.

16. Check the clearance between bushing (12) and plate (11) with a feeler gauge. The clearance must not be more than .76 mm (.030 in). If the bushing is worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. Remove bushing (12) from plate (11).

17. Fasten a hoist to steer pivot housing (15). Remove the steer pivot housing from the pivot pin in the yoke. Weight of the steer pivot housing is 80 kg (175 lb).

18. Check the clearance between bushings (13) and (14) and the steer pivot housing with a feeler gauge. The clearance must not be more than .76 mm (.030 in). If the bushings are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. Remove bushings (13) and (14) from the steer pivot housing.

19. Check the clearance between lower bushing (16) and the rear frame of the machine. The clearance must not be more than .76 mm (.030 in). If the bushing is worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. Remove bushing (15) from the frame of the machine.

NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the yoke and steering pivot assembly.

20. Be sure all parts of the of the steering pivot assembly are clean and free of dirt and debris.

21. Put a thin coat of 5P0960 Multipurpose Grease in the frame bore. Install bushing (16) in the frame with a hammer and a soft punch.

22. Lubricate the bores in the steer pivot housing with 5P0960 Multipurpose Grease. Install bushings (13) and (14) with a hammer and a soft punch.

23. Lubricate the bore in plate (11) with 5P0960 Multipurpose Grease. Install bushing (12) in plate (11).

24. Lubricate the pivot pin in the yoke with 5P0960 Multipurpose Grease.

25. Fasten a hoist to steer pivot housing (15). Install the housing on the yoke. Use two persons to install plate (11) on the pivot pin in the yoke. Install the eight washers and bolts that hold plate (11), but do not tighten them. Put the original amount of shims between plate (11) and steer pivot housing (15). Tighten the eight bolts that hold plate (11).

26. Reinstall the wood block between the steer pivot housing and the yoke assembly so the steer pivot housing can not pivot from side-to-side.

27. On CS-433B Compactors only, reinstall the rear scraper assembly in the yoke.

28. Install spacers (8) between the mounting ears on the rear frame.

NOTE: It may be necessary to remove the wood block from between the steer pivot housing and the yoke assembly to put the pin bores in alignment.

29. Fasten a hoist to yoke assembly (7), and put it in position on the rear frame. Be sure the pin bores in the steer pivot housing and the mounting ears on the rear frame are in alignment. Lubricate pins (6) with 5P0960 Multipurpose Grease, and install the pins. Install bolts (3) and nuts (4) that hold pins (6). Reinstall grease fittings (5) in pins (6).

30. Put wood blocks under the front of the yoke assembly to support it. Remove the hoist from the yoke assembly.

31. Connect the steering cylinders to the steer pivot housing with bolts (1) and nuts (2).

32. Connect the hydraulic hoses and the electrical wiring harnesses to the yoke assembly.

NOTE: After installation of the drum assembly, the clearance between the vertical bushings, vertical pins, horizontal pins and horizontal bushings must be checked. Use the procedure which follows:

33. Check the vertical bushing clearance as follows:

a. Put the machine on a hard level surface. Stop the engine, and apply the secondary brake.

b. Attach the base of tool (B) to the top of the steer pivot housing as shown. Set the dial indicator actuator against the rear frame as shown.

c. Set the dial indicator to zero.

d. Put a hydraulic jack under the rear frame at the pivot assembly as shown.

e. Raise the hydraulic jack to obtain the greatest dial indicator reading. Record this dimension.

f. The total movement should be .30 to .76 mm (.012 to .030 in). If the total movement is too much, the steer pivot housing should be disassembled. Bushings or any other worn components should be replaced.

34. Check the vertical pin clearance as follows:

a. Put the machine on a hard level surface. Stop the engine, and apply the secondary brake.

b. Attach the base of tool (B) to the top of the steer pivot housing as shown in Photo C31181P1. Set the dial indicator actuator against the rear frame as shown.

c. Set the dial indicator to zero.

d. Put a hydraulic jack under the rear frame at the pivot assembly as shown in Photo C31182P1.

e. Raise the hydraulic jack, and record the reading on the dial indicator.

NOTE: When adding or removing spacers, be sure to install an equal amount of spacers at each pivot joint.

f. Pivot movement should be .30 to .76 mm (.012 to .030 in). If the movement is too much, the clearance can be reduced by adding spacers (8) at the vertical pin joints. If the movement is too small, spacers (8) can be removed to reduce the clearance.

g. If the proper clearance can not be obtained with spacers (8), the steer pivot housing should be disassembled. Bushings and any other worn components should be replaced.

35. Check the horizontal pin clearance as follows:

a. Put the machine on a hard level surface. Stop the engine, and apply the secondary brake.

b. Attach the base of tool (B) to the top of the yoke assembly as shown. Set the dial indicator actuator against the front face of plate (11) as shown.

c. Insert a long, heavy pry bar between the yoke assembly and the steer pivot housing at location (Z). Push hard on the pry bar to move the drum and yoke assembly as far forward as possible.

d. With the dial indicator actuator set against the front face of plate (11), set the dial indicator to zero.

e. Insert a long, heavy pry bar between the yoke assembly and plate (11) at location (Y). Push hard on the pry bar to move the drum and yoke assembly back toward the rear frame. Observe the dial indicator, and record the reading.

NOTE: When removing or adding shims behind plate (11), remove or add equal amounts at the top and bottom of the plate.

f. Total movement should be .30 to .76 mm (.012 to .030 in). If the movement is too much, the clearance can be reduced by removing shims from behind plate (11). If the clearance is too small, shims can be added to increase the clearance.

g. If the proper clearance cannot be obtained with the removal or addition of shims, the steer pivot housing should be disassembled. Bushings and any other worn or damaged components should be replaced.

36. Check the horizontal bushing clearance:

a. Put the machine on a hard level surface. Stop the engine, and apply the secondary brake.

b. Attach the base of tool (B) to the top of the yoke assembly as shown. Set the dial indicator actuator against the top of the steer pivot housing as shown.

c. Set the dial indicator to zero.

d. Insert a long, heavy pry bar between the yoke assembly and the steer pivot housing at the bottom of the housing.

e. Lift up on the pry bar as much as possible inside the steer pivot housing. Observe the dial indicator, and record the reading.

f. Total movement should be .30 to .76 mm (.012 to .030 in). If the movement is too much, the steer pivot housing should be disassembled. Bushings and any other worn components should be replaced.
