(9) Wheel bearing cones and rollers

(10) Spindle

  1. Press the wheel bearing cups (8) into the wheel (2). Check the seating with a feeler gauge.

  1. Install the Duo-Cone Seal Kit (7) in the wheel (2) .

  1. Install the Duo-Cone Seal Kit (7) on the spindle (10) .

  1. Install the outer wheel bearing cones and rollers (9) on the hub (3). Lightly oil the cone.

  1. Install the inner wheel bearing cones and rollers (9) on the spindle (10). Lightly oil the cone.

  1. Put the wheel (2) on the spindle (10) .

  1. Place the hub (3) on the spindle (10) .

  1. Use an outside micrometer and measure the thickness of the bearing adjusting plate (4) at the three small holes. Record the average thickness.

  1. Install the bearing adjusting plate (4) on the spindle (10). Do not use the shims (6) and do not tighten the adjusting plate bolts (5) .

  1. Rotate the wheel (2) in order to seat the wheel bearing cones and rollers (9) .

  1. While you are rotating the wheel (2), torque the three adjusting plate bolts (5) to 100 N·m (74 lb ft) in order to seat the parts.

  1. Loosen the three adjusting plate bolts (5) .

  1. After using a torque wrench on the mounting bolt of the wheel rim, write down the rolling torque. The grip length for the torque wrench is 203 mm (8 inch).

  1. While you are rotating the wheel (2), torque the three adjusting plate bolts (5) to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  1. While you are using a depth micrometer, measure the three small holes in the bearing adjusting plate (4). Record the average depth.

  1. Find the difference between the two average measurements in steps 8 and 15. The difference is the gap between the end of the spindle housing and the adjusting plate.

  1. Remove the bearing adjusting plate (4). Install an amount of shims (6) that is 0.203 mm (.0080 inch) thicker than the average gap that is found in step 16.

  1. Install the bearing adjusting plate (4) and torque the adjusting plate bolts (5) evenly to 150 ± 20 N·m (111 ± 15 lb ft).

  1. Attach a torque wrench to the wheel rim mounting bolt (1). Read the torque that is needed to continuously rotate the wheel. The final drive is not installed.

  1. Subtract the seal rotating torque that is obtained in step 13 from the torque that is obtained in step 19. The actual rolling torque for the preloaded bearings is 8.5 N·m (75.23 lb in) for a new wheel and 5.0 N·m (44.25 lb in) for a used wheel.

A piece of strap iron with a nut in the center can be bolted across the wheel. Place the torque wrench directly on this nut. The desired rotating torque will be 18 N·m (159 lb in) for a new wheel and 10 N·m (89 lb in) for an old wheel.

If the turning torque is high, disassemble the parts and check for interference. If the torque with the new bearings is lower than the used bearings, compute the amount of shims that will be needed.
