Introduction
This special instruction provides the installation procedure for the 240-5916 Repair Kit (Muffler Clamp). This repair kit may be used on the following catalytic converter/mufflers:
- 213-9025 Muffler and Converter Gp
- 213-9027 Muffler and Converter Gp
- 220-5681 Muffler and Converter Gp
The entire procedure should be read and understood before any work has begun.
The procedure that is outlined below can be performed without removing the catalytic converter/muffler from the vehicle. First, the muffler strap that is farthest from the muffler's inlet will be removed and replaced. This procedure will be repeated for the replacement of the strap that is positioned closest to the muffler's inlet.
Removal of the Muffler Strap
Note: The muffler strap that is located farthest from the inlet for the muffler should be replaced first. By replacing the muffler straps individually, removal of the catalytic converter/muffler from the vehicle will not be necessary.
- Use a grinder in order to cut the muffler strap at the location of the overlapping area of the strap (1) .

Overlapping area of the muffler strap |
- Use the portion of the overlapping area to protect the muffler from the grinding wheel. This will reduce the possibility of damage to the housing of the muffler while you cut the strap. Refer to Illustration 2.

- Continue removing the mounting strap by grinding the weld areas that are between the strap and the housing of the muffler (2) .
Note: Be sure not to damage the body of the muffler while you remove this portion of the weld.

- Remove the muffler strap and the clip assembly from the muffler by removing the bolt that holds the mounting isolator to the clip.

Installation of the New Muffler Strap
- Position the new muffler strap onto the catalytic converter/muffler. Orient the clamped joint for the new strap on the bottom side of the muffler. Hand tighten the bolt for the clamped joint in order to hold the strap in correct placement.

- Align the clip assembly to the mounting isolator and reinstall the bolt. Refer to Illustration 6.
Torque the bolt for the mounting isolator.
Bolt torque for the mounting isolator ... 40 to 54 N·m (30.0 to 40.0 lb ft)

- If necessary, reposition the mounting strap.
Torque the clamping bolt.
Torque for the clamping bolt ... 19 to 24 N·m (14.0 to 18.0 lb ft)
Note: The clamped joint should be squeezed together, but the joint should not become deformed excessively. Refer to Illustration 5.
Repeat this procedure in order to replace the remaining muffler strap.
