Usage:

3208 Truck Engines Equipped With Exhaust Gas Recirculation (E.G.R.) Systems

SUPPLEMENT: 05/04/81

SERVICE MAGAZINE, MARCH 9, 1981, PAGE 9. In the article, "Clean Electrical Contacts In Exhaust Gas Recirculation (E.G.R.) Switch Group And Cover Assembly Before Installation," there are two other contacts that also are to be cleaned. The illustration in this Supplement shows two contacts that were not originally shown. They are the two contacts nearest the bottom of the illustration.

Make a reference to this Supplement in the March 9, 1981 Service Magazine article.

--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------

Low emission 3208 Truck Engines use an exhaust gas recirculation (E.G.R.) system. The E.G.R. system uses a 9N5252 Switch Group and a 1W559 Cover Assembly on the fuel injection pump.

It is important that the electrical contacts in the switch group and the cover assembly be clean and dry before installation. See the Illustration. This is necessary for a good electrical connection.

The arrows (marks) show the locations of contacts in the 9N5252 Switch Group and the 1W559 Cover Assembly.

It is Caterpillar's recommendation that the contacts be thoroughly cleaned with Heavy Duty Solvent Flux Remover, MS 190 HD. This will remove any foreign material from the contacts. The solvent flux remover is available from:

Miller-Stephenson Chemical Co., Inc.
6348 Oakton Street
Morton Grove, Illinois 60053
U.S.A.

or

Miller-Stephenson Chemical Co., Inc.
1001 East First Street
Los Angeles, California 90033
U.S.A.

Before installation of the 1W559 Cover Assembly, check its operation with the 6V3060 E.G.R. Tester Group. Then, install the cover assembly and use the test group to check the operations of the switch group and the cover assembly.

If 6V3060 E.G.R. Tester Group is not available, install the switch group and the cover assembly as per the Service Manual instructions. Then, use a direct current voltmeter to check the voltage output from the cover assembly, as per the procedure given in the Service Manual.
