Usage:
Several design improvements have been made to new Caterpillar Operator's Guides, Lubrication and Maintenance Guides, Service Manuals and Parts Books.
These books have covers with a new design. See Illustration 1. On the front of the covers, the title, the product model number and the serial numbers can be more easily read. Some of the Parts Books also list the serial numbers on the edge of the cover. These improvements make selection of the desired book faster and easier.

The covers are also color-coded according to product for easier identification. The covers of new engine publications are gold (yellow) and brown. Earthmoving publications are tan and blue, and lift truck publications are tan and burgundy (dark red). All covers are made of a heavier paper that has improved resistance to dirt and grease.
With the change to the new covers there are also title changes for three of these publications:
-
- * The Operator's Guide is now an Operation Guide.
- * The Lubrication and Maintenance Guide is now a Maintenance Guide.
- * The Operation, Lubrication and Maintenance Guide is now an Operation and Maintenance Guide.
- * The Operator's Guide is now an Operation Guide.
The page design has also been changed for some publications. See Illustration 2. In future Guides, the columns will be read vertically instead of horizontally as in the past. Larger type and a change in the kind of type used make the Guides easier to read.

These changes to Caterpillar Service Literature are in effect with the introduction of the 943 Track-Type loader. They will be made gradually as new products and new information become available.
