Solenoid Valve (Starting Air)
Illustration 1 | g00792477 |
Solenoid valve for the starting air |
The solenoid valve supplies air to the starting motors in order to start the engine.
The solenoid valve is an on/off valve that uses a 24 volt coil. When the coil is energized, the solenoid valve is open. The valve can be actuated manually in order to open the valve.
When the solenoid valve is on, air is supplied to the starter motors.
Note: If the valve is actuated manually, the engine will begin to turn.
Solenoid Valve (Prelubrication)
Illustration 2 | g00792477 |
Solenoid valve for the prelubrication |
The solenoid valve supplies air to the prelubrication oil pump in order to supply oil to the engine for intermittent prelubrication systems.
The solenoid valve is an on/off valve that uses a 24 volt coil. When the coil is energized, the solenoid valve is open. The valve can be actuated manually in order to open the valve.
When the solenoid valve is on, air is supplied to the pump. The pump supplies engine oil to the engine. An engine oil pressure of 10 kPa (1.5 psi) must be reached before the engine can be started.
Note: The continuous prelubrication systems and some intermittent prelubrication systems use an electric motor in order to lubricate the engine. Therefore, this solenoid valve would not be used.
Solenoid Valve (Air Shutoff)
Illustration 3 | g00792477 |
Solenoid valve for the air shutoff |
The solenoid valve supplies air to the air shutoff.
The solenoid valve is an on/off valve that uses a 24 volt coil. When the coil is energized, the solenoid valve is open.
When the solenoid valve is on, air is supplied to the air shutoff. The air shutoff shuts off the air supply to the manifold of the engine. The air shutoff is used for the following conditions: emergency stop and engine overspeed .
Solenoid (Fuel Shutoff)
Illustration 4 | g00792478 |
Solenoid for the fuel shutoff |
The solenoid actuates the fuel shutoff that is used on 3161 governors.
The solenoid is a plunger that uses a 24 volt coil. When the solenoid is energized, the plunger is actuated.
The plunger drives the actuator of the governor to the fuel shutoff position. The solenoid is used in order to shut off fuel to the engine for the following conditions: normal shutdowns, fault shutdowns and emergency shutdowns.
Note: Not all governors will use a fuel shutoff solenoid.
