Turbocharger

Usage:

Remove & Install Turbocharger

Fluid Spillage Containment

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Remove turbocharger and exhaust manifold guards (1).

2. Cut tie wraps (7). Remove oil supply line (4). Cap and plug all openings immediately. Remove gasket (3).

3. Remove two bolts and washers (6). Move oil drain line (2) out of the way. Cap and plug all openings immediately. Remove gasket (5).

4. Loosen clamps (8). Remove rubber connector (9).

5. Remove two bolts and nuts (12). Remove adapter (10), mounting bracket (11) and exhaust elbow (13) as an assembly.

6. Remove five bolts and washers (15). Two of the bolts have retainers (19).

7. Remove air inlet elbow (16). Remove two O-ring seals (18) and adapter (14). Remove gasket (17).

8. Attach a lifting sling and a suitable lifting device to turbocharger (19) as shown. The weight of the turbocharger is approximately 20 kg (44 lb).

9. Remove four bolts and lock nuts (20).

10. Remove turbocharger (19), and gasket (21) from exhaust manifold (22).

NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the turbocharger.

11. Put gasket (21) and turbocharger (19) in position on exhaust manifold (22). Put 5P-3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads of bolts and lock nuts (20). Install bolts and lock nuts (20). Tighten the nuts to a torque of 54 ± 5 N·m (40 ± 4 lb ft).

12. Install gasket (17), two O-ring seals (18) and adapter (14). Install air inlet elbow (16).

13. Install five bolts and washers (15). Two of the bolts have retainers (19).

14. Install adapter (10), mounting bracket (11) and exhaust elbow (13) as an assembly. Install two bolts and nuts (12).

15. Install rubber connector (9). Tighten clamps (8).

16. Install gasket (5). Connect oil drain line (2). Install two bolts and washers (6).

17. Install gasket (3). Install oil supply line (4). Install new tie wraps (7).

18. Install turbocharger and exhaust manifold guards (1).
