    Note: The ring gear must be installed with the chamfered side of the teeth upward. The chamfered side of the gear teeth will be facing toward the electric starter motor when the flywheel is installed correctly.

  1. Raise the temperature of ring gear (6). Install ring gear (6) on flywheel (3).

    Note: Do not use a torch to heat the ring gear.

  2. Install Tooling (B).

  3. Attach Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device to the flywheel. The weight of the flywheel is approximately 54 kg (120 lb). Position the flywheel on the engine. Remove Tooling (C).

    Note: Tooling (A) may be used to orient dowel (7) with the dowel hole in the flywheel.

  4. Apply Tooling (D) to bolts (5) and install bolts (5) in flywheel (3). Remove Tooling (B).

  5. Apply Tooling (D) to remaining bolts (5). Install remaining bolts (5) in flywheel (3).

    Note: Bolts (5) may be either 12 point head bolts or hex head bolts. Tighten bolts (5) to the correct torque.

  6. Tighten bolts (5). Refer to Table 2 for the correct torque specification.

  7. Install speed sensor (1) to flywheel housing (2). Turn speed sensor (1) clockwise until speed sensor (1) is in contact with the gear on the flywheel. Turn speed sensor (1) counterclockwise to a distance of 180 ± 36 degrees. Tighten the locknut on speed sensor (1) to a torque of 45 ± 7 N·m (33 ± 5 lb ft).

End By:

  1. Install the electric starting motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starting Motor - Remove and Install".
