NOTE:

This Program must be administered as soon as possible. When reporting the repair, use "PI10729" as the Part Number and "7751" as the Group Number, "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and "T" as the SIMS Description Code.
Exception: If the repair is done after failure, use "PI10729" as the Part Number, "7751" as the Group Number, "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code, and "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.

The boom cylinders need to be inspected, and replaced if needed, on certain 330D Excavators. The existing boom cylinders may have an incomplete seam weld resulting in early hour failure. A seam failure can cause the boom to drop unexpectedly and/or the discharge of hot oil, which may result in personal injury or death.

The Cylinder Assembly and the Seal Kit are only needed after the UT Ultrasound Inspection has been completed and a faulty cylinder is detected.

ACTION REQUIRED

Inspect all machines to determine the current hour meter reading. Machines with less than 300 hours are at risk of a catastrophic failure of the boom cylinder weld seam. See the below procedure for machines with less than 300 hours. Machines with over 300 hours, can be returned to service. See the below procedure for machines with more than 300 hours.

Less Than 300 Hours
1. Cease operation of the at risk machines. Attach a SEHS7332 "Do Not Operate" warning tag to the joystick. This tag is to instruct and remind machine operators and maintenance personnel not to operate the machine. The SEHS7332 "Do Not Operate" Warning Tag can be ordered through Caterpillar Media Logistics by calling 1-800-566-7782.

2. Contact your Dealership's Technical Communicator (TC). Have the TC submit a High Priority Dealer Solution Network (DSN) Service Request, and request it to be sent to the Hydraulics Service Engineer in order to schedule an UT ultrasound inspection. Make sure to include the machine serial number and hour meter reading, and reference this Service Letter number in the Service Request. This is an interim corrective action until an UT ultrasound test is performed. The at risk machines are to remain out of service until all suspect cylinders are inspected and/or replaced.

3. The TC will then be notified when to expect the inspection team via the DSN ticket along with information that is necessary to complete any repairs.

More Than 300 Hours
1. Release the machine for normal operation.

2. Contact your Dealership's TC, referencing this Service Letter. Have the TC enter a SIMS ticket with the machine serial number, hours, and note in the comment field stating "REBE4627 completed".

NOTE: This is a 0.5-hour job
This .5 hour is for reading the hour meter, tagging the machine if under 300 hours and reporting the results to Caterpillar. An additional .5 hour plus travel & mileage will be allowed for accompanying the inspection team to a tagged machine, removing the tag or ordering repair parts if defect is found, and reporting the inspection results to Caterpillar. An additional 6.5 hours will be allowed for rebuilding cylinders found with this defect.

Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:

The boom cylinders need to be inspected and possibly replaced on the products listed below. Machines with less than 300 hours are at risk of a catastrophic failure of the boom cylinder weld seam. The existing boom cylinders may have an incomplete seam weld resulting in early hour failure. A seam failure can cause the boom to drop unexpectedly and/or discharge hot oil which may result in personal injury or death. You will not be charged for the service performed.

Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.

Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 04Dec2008 when scheduling this service.
