PROBLEM

The fuel injectors used in the C6.4 engine installed in certain 320D excavators have been failing due to high levels of contaminants in the fuel supplies commonly found in the Asia-Pacific Regions. Fuel cleanliness practices and fuel system maintenance are very important in receiving adequate life from the fuel injectors. In an effort to improve these practices, new engine software has been developed to increase the awareness to the operator when a fuel filter is plugged or is in need of replacement.

Also, field investigations have uncovered that non Caterpillar fuel filters are being used in some of the areas in the Asia Pacific Region. The non Caterpillar fuel filters look identical to genuine Caterpillar fuel filters but do not have the efficiency to filter the high levels of contaminants in the fuel. This service letter will provide 1 set of fuel filters for the machines covered in this program to be used, in an effort to educate the customers on the benefits of using genuine Caterpillar fuel filters.

The engine and machine software needs to be updated and new fuel filters installed on the products listed below. The new software incorporates improved detection strategies for plugged fuel filters. You will not be charged for the service performed.

Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.

Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 04Mar2009 when scheduling this service.

Rework Procedure

Connect to the Engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) using CAT ET. Once connected, select the "Information" tab at the top of the window. Select the "Prognostics Download" from the drop down menu. Make sure all boxes are checked. Select "Load Data". Once data has been loaded, select "Save Data". Save the file to the user's computer, the file will need to be attached to the service claim.
 
While still connected to the Engine ECM with CAT ET, document which software group part number is currently loaded into the Engine ECM. Use the chart to determine what new version of software is needed based on the current version in the Engine ECM.

Open SISweb. Select the "Service Software Files" link on the front page. Next, select the "Flash Files" link. On the next page, enter the machine serial number in order to download the new engine software. Also download the latest machine software.
 
Using the winflash function in CAT ET, load the latest engine software file into the Engine ECM. Next, load the latest machine software file into the Machine ECM. Once both files have been loaded, turn the ignition key OFF for 1 minute.
 
Turn ignition key to the ON position. Adjust the "FUEL FILTER" change interval on the monitor to 250 HRS. If the fuel filter change interval is already set to 250 HRS, no further action is needed to adjust the interval.
 
NOTE: To adjust the "FUEL FILTER" change interval in the monitor, refer to systems operation manual RENR8068.
 
Use a digital camera to take a photograph of the primary fuel filter, secondary fuel filter, and tertiary fuel filter on the machine. Take the photograph in such a way that the brand of the fuel filter is easily readable. Each of the three pictures should be named so they can be identified correctly. The files should be named:

Primary filter = Primary_1
Secondary filter = Sec_1
Tertiary filter = Ter_1
 
Remove the primary fuel filter and replace with 326-1644. Remove the secondary fuel filter and replace with 1R0751. Remove tertiary fuel filter and replace with 1R0751. DO NOT prefill fuel filters with fuel before installation. Once installed, use the fuel priming pump to remove air from the fuel system.
 
Once all work is completed, make sure the following electronic files have been saved for attachment to service claim through SIMSi.

1. Prognostic download from Engine ECM.
2. One picture of primary fuel filter on machine (file Primary_1).
3. One picture of secondary fuel filter on machine (file Sec_1).
4. One picture of tertiary fuel filter on machine (file Ter_1).

Using the winflash function in CAT ET, load the latest engine software file into the Engine ECM. Next, load the latest machine software file into the Machine ECM. Once both files have been loaded, turn the ignition key OFF for 1 minute.
 
Turn ignition key to the ON position. Adjust the "FUEL FILTER" change interval on the monitor to 250 HRS. This may already be done on some machines. If the fuel filter change interval is already set to 250 HRS, no further action is needed to adjust the interval.
 
NOTE: To adjust the "FUEL FILTER" change interval in the monitor, refer to systems operation manual RENR8068.
 
Using a digital camera, take a photograph of the primary fuel filter, secondary fuel filter and tertiary fuel filter on the machine. Take the photograph in such a way that the brand of the fuel filter is easily readable. Each of the three pictures should be named so they can be identified correctly. The files should be named:

Primary filter = Primary_1
Secondary filter = Sec_1
Tertiary filter = Ter_1
 
Remove the primary fuel filter and replace with 326-1644. Remove the secondary fuel filter and replace with 1R0751. Remove tertiary fuel filter and replace with 1R0751. DO NOT prefill fuel filters with fuel before installation. Once installed, use the fuel priming pump to remove air from the fuel system.
 
If the three fuel filters removed from the machine were CAT branded fuel filters, the filters need to be cut open for verification of authenticity. Service tool 175-7546 can be used to cut open spin on style filters. Before cutting open the filters, use a digital camera to take a picture of the top of each filter similar to Image2.9.1. Each of the three pictures should be named so they can be identified correctly. The files should be named as follows:

Primary filter = Primary_Top_1
Secondary filter = Sec_Top_1
Tertiary filter = Ter_Top_1

Save files, they need to be attached to SIMSi report.

After the filters have been cut open, take a photograph of each element standing on end. Refer to Image2.10.1 as guideline for how to take photograph. Each of the three pictures should be named so they can be identified correctly. The files should be named:

Primary filter= Primary_EL_1
Secondary filter= Sec_EL_1
Tertiary filter= Ter_EL_1

Save files as they need to be attached to SIMSi report.

Next, take a photograph of the top end cap and bottom end cap of each filter element. Refer to Images 2.11.1 and 2.11.2 as reference on how picture should be taken. Each of the three pictures should be named so they can be identified correctly. The files should be named:

Primary filter end cap top = Primary_end_top_1
Primary filter end cap bottom = Primary_end_bot_1
Secondary filter end cap top = Sec_end_top_1
Secondary filter end cap bottom = Sec_end_bot_1
Tertiary filter end cap top = Ter_end_top_1
Tertiary filter end cap bottom = Ter_end_bot_1

Save files, they need to be attached to SIMSi report.

Once all work is completed, make sure the following electronic files have been saved for attachment to service claim through SIMSi.

1. Prognostic download from Engine ECM
2. One picture of primary fuel filter on machine (file Primary_1)
3. One picture of secondary fuel filter on machine (file Sec_1)
4. One picture of tertiary fuel filter on machine (file Ter_1)
5. One picture of top of primary fuel filter (file Primary_Top_1)
6. One picture of top of secondary fuel filter (file Sec_Top_1)
7. One picture of top of tertiary fuel filter (file Ter_Top_1)
8. One picture of primary fuel filter element after canister cut open (file Primary_EL_1)
9. One picture of secondary fuel filter element after canister cut open (file Sec_EL_1)
10. One picture of tertiary fuel filter element after canister cut open (file Ter_EL_1)
11. One picture each of primary fuel filter top and bottom end cap of element (files Primary_end_top_1 and Primary_end_bot_1)
12. One picture each of secondary fuel filter top and bottom end cap of element (files Sec_end_top_1 and Sec_end_bot_1)
13. One picture each of tertiary fuel filter top and bottom end cap of element (files Ter_end_top_1 and Ter_end_bot_1)
