When reporting the repair, use "PS44107" as the Part Number and "7755" as the Group Number. If administered before failure, use "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and "T" as the SIMS Description code. If administered after failure, use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code, and "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.

PROBLEM

The current 358-5488 single bolt turbo exhaust housing band clamp will not allow for clamp load on certain 3512C Locomotive Engines. Updating to the two bolt 3725858/">372-5858 band clamp which will achieve clamp load.

ACTION REQUIRED

Remove the current 358-5488 single bolt band clamp. Install the new 3725858/">372-5858 two bolt band clamp and 303-6267 gasket. Refer to the attached Rework Procedure.
Refer to Engine News, SEBD9907, "A New Band Clamp is Used for Certain 3512C Locomotive Engines".

Rework Procedure


 
1. Prior to changing out the clamps, loosen the two bellows that connect to the turbine housing so that the turbo is isolated and there is no force pulling on the turbine housing. See Image 1.
2. Remove the old clamp. See Image 2.
3. When putting the new clamp (3725858/">372-5858) on, unbolt both trunnions and assemble in two halves. This will ensure the clamp is not deformed or yielded by stretching it during assembly. Assemble both segments applying anti seize to the threads of both bolts prior to assembling nuts.
4. Before installing the new clamp (3725858/">372-5858), make sure the turbine housing is aligned properly. Also make sure that the two mating flanges are flush against each other all the way around. A rubber mallet can be used to hit the outside of the turbine housing if needed. If there is any gap between the flanges, they may not pull together when the clamp is tightened. If there is any gap, the joint will not hold once the engine starts running.
Note: It may be necessary to loosen the Turbo cartridge bolts to allow the cartridge to move and align the cartridge flange with the turbo flange.
5. Tighten one side of the clamp to approximately a 10 mm gap, or approximately 10mm of exposed threads is remaining beyond the nut. Check that gap between both segments is approximately equal. See Image 3.
6. Tighten both nuts to 20 Nm.
Note: When tightening the new clamp (3725858/">372-5858) tap on the clamp in four places in order to properly seat the four sections of the "V" on the clamp. It will be necessary to use a punch of correct length on the bottom side of the band clamp due to location in order to get proper impact to seat that section of the clamp. The tapping can be firm, but not hard enough to deform the clamp.
7. Tighten the clamp to 28 to 30 Nm on both the top and bottom nuts, tap all the way around the clamp again, and then tighten again to 28 to 30 Nm.
