    Illustration 17g01288438

  1. Install pinion cage assembly (11) and yoke (12) on pinion cage assembly (13).

  1. Place pinion (13) in a suitable press. Apply 169032 ± 4448 N (38000 ± 1000 lb) in order to preload the assembly. Attach a scale to the pinion in order to achieve a rolling torque of 31 ± 13 N (7 ± 3 lb). If the measurement does not fall with the acceptable range, disassemble pinion (13) and change the spacer.

    Illustration 18g01283553

  1. Install pinion nut (10) .

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device to yoke (10). Place the shim pack on differential assembly (9) and install pinion cage assembly (11) on differential assembly (9) .

    Illustration 19g01283550

  1. Install adjusters (7) and bearing caps (5). Install the bearing cap bolts finger tight.

    Illustration 20g01288439

  1. Lubricate bearing (19) and bearing (21) with clean oil.

    Illustration 21g01288440

  1. Loosen adjuster (7). Loosen the adjuster until the first thread is visible. Tighten the adjuster on the back side of the ring gear until there is no backlash.

    Illustration 22g01288441

  1. Tighten adjuster (7) until the adjuster contacts the bearing cup. Tighten the adjuster, as required. This will preload the bearings. Also, provide the approximate backlash.

    Illustration 23g01288638

    Illustration 24g01288442

  1. Attach Tooling (D) to ring gear (8), as shown. Rotate the ring gear until Tooling (D) makes contact with the ring gear. Zero out Tooling (D). Rotate the ring gear back and forth and write down the measurement from Tooling (D). The measurement should be 0.33 ± 0.13 mm (0.013 ± 0.005 inch). Adjust the backlash with adjuster (7) .

  1. Apply a marking compound to 12 teeth of the ring gear. Rotate the ring gear so the teeth are next to the pinion.

    Illustration 26g00932008

  1. This is a good ring gear tooth contact.

    Illustration 27g00932009

Note: This is a high ring gear tooth contact.

  1. The drive pinion is too deep into the carrier.

    Illustration 28g00932101

Note: This is a low ring gear tooth contact.

  1. The drive pinion is not deep enough into the carrier.

    Illustration 29g01288641
