Start By:
- Remove the fixed axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fixed Axle (Front) - Remove and Install".
- Remove the oscillating axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Oscillating Axle (Rear) - Remove and Install".
- Install the axle on Tooling (B) in a vertical position, as shown.
Note: Carefully remove the axle housing assembly.
- Fasten Tooling (A) and a hoist to the rim of the axle shaft, as shown. Remove bolts (1) that secure axle housing assembly (2) to the differential housing. Carefully remove the axle housing assembly. The weight of axle housing assembly (2) is
295 kg (650 lb) .Note: The service brakes that are part of the fixed axle are similar to the service brakes that are part of the oscillating axle. Therefore, both service brakes can be removed in the same manner.

Illustration 4 g00497120 Show/hide tablePersonal injury can result from air pressure against the brake piston.
The brake piston can come out of the differential housing assembly with force when applying air pressure.
To prevent possible personal injury, the brake piston must be retained in the differential housing assembly when applying air pressure.
- Retain brake piston (7). Apply shop air pressure to fitting (Y). Use approximately
525 kPa (75 psi) . Brake piston (7) will move out of the differential housing.Show/hide tableIllustration 5 g00497171 - Remove seal (8) and seal assembly (9).
- Repeat Steps 1 through 5 for the remaining service brake.
Note: The axle housing assemblies that are used in the front fixed axle and in the rear oscillating axle are similar. Therefore, both axle housing assemblies can be removed in the same manner.
