NOTE: Although this Program is to be administered as described above on the Affected Product, parts should be removed from parts stock as soon as possible.
NOTE: This Revised Service Letter replaces the May 15, 2000 (Revised June 2000) Service Letter. Changes have been made to the Termination Date, Parts Needed (Flash Files), and the Rework Procedure. Tractors previously reworked do NOT need to be further updated.
TERMINATION DATE
May 31, 2002PROBLEM
The software in the tractor engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) supporting the Caterpillar Information Display (Cat ID) feature in some early tractors contains errors. The key errors relate to the calculation of fuel consumption and PM intervals. New software has been developed to address these errors. Besides flashing this updated software to the ECM in each of the affected tractors, a new EPROM chip will need to be installed in the Cat ID electronic display module in those tractors so equipped. A later group of tractors needs only the new ECM software flashed. In addition to resolving the problem issues mentioned above, the new EPROM chip and ECM software will also correct the Pin H problem when using the Electronic Technician (ET) with the Universal Data Link Cable detailed in a previous service publication. The capability of the ECM and Cat ID display to support the engine idle shutdown timer has been removed.AFFECTED PRODUCT

PARTS DISPOSITION
Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling.Rework Procedure
4) If the "Fuel Rate Scaling" factor has not been programmed, double check to make sure it is currently set at "0". Go to the Information/Current Totals screen. Then reset the "Total Fuel" value to 0.50 (50%) of the existing number. (For example, if the current "Total Fuel" reading is 1000, reset it to 500.) In like manner, reset the "Total Max Fuel" to 0.50 (50%) of the existing number. These resets will require the previously obtained factory passwords. (In this case, all future software output parameters, including all "Lifetime Totals", will be accurate.)
If the "Fuel Rate Scaling" factor has been
programmed, reset it to "0". Then reset the "Total Fuel" consumed value
to 0.67 (67%) of the existing number. (For example, if the current "Total
Fuel" reading is 1000, reset it to 670.) In like manner, reset the "Total
Max Fuel" to 0.67 (67%) of the existing number. This will require the previously
obtained factory passwords. (In this case, all future software output parameters,
except "Lifetime Totals" related to fuel consumption, will be accurate.
The "Lifetime Totals" related to fuel consumption will NOT be accurate.
However, lifetime accuracy will improve as more fuel is consumed by the
tractor engine.)
2) If the tractor cab is not equipped with a radio, remove the 9U-8263 Cover installed in the right hand opening in the cab headliner bezel. (Refer to Illustration 1.)
3) If the tractor cab is equipped with either the AM/FM Stereo Radio with weatherband and cassette or AM/FM Stereo Radio with cassette and CD changer controls, remove the radio from the headliner bezel support using the proper removal aid (provided with each radio). Disconnect the electrical harness connector, antenna connector, and the CD changer electrical connector (if so equipped). (Refer to Illustration 1.)
4) Open the access door located at the left hand side of the cab headliner bezel.
5) If the tractor cab is equipped with a CD Changer Group behind the access door, remove the four (4) 136-5634 Screws at the bottom surface of the headliner which retain the CD changer support bracket. Retain. Carefully slide the CD changer forward into the headliner opening. Once the changer is slid past the bezel and bezel support, rotate the changer away from the right hand edge of the access opening. (Refer to Illustration 2.)
6) Reach in through the now exposed bezel openings to unscrew the two (2) knurled screws retaining the electronic display support bracket. Remove the bracket. Slide the 145-0145 Electronic Display Gp. rearward out of the bezel opening. Disconnect the electrical harness connector. (Refer to Illustration 3.)
7) Grasp both sides of the EPROM cover at the tabs and remove it from the back of the display. Do not use a screwdriver to remove the EPROM cover. Damage to the display will result. (Refer to Illustration 4.)
8) Remove the existing 145-0141 EPROM/Carrier from the display by carefully grasping the tabs at the top and bottom and removing the carrier. Do not use a screwdriver to remove the EPROM/Carrier. Damage to the display will result. Discard. (Refer to Illustration 5.)
9) Install the new 171-2087 EPROM/Carrier. Match the notches at the top and bottom of the EPROM carrier cavity with the EPROM carrier. Insert the EPROM until the top of the carrier is flush with the carrier cavity.
10) Reinstall the removed EPROM cover.
11) Reconnect the electronic display electrical connector to the wiring harness. Slide the display back into the headliner bezel opening. Position the display and retain with the previously removed support bracket and retaining screws.
12) Reposition the CD Changer Group (with support bracket) within the headliner opening, if previously moved in Step 5. Retain with the four (4) removed 136-5634 Screws.
13) Reconnect the radio electrical harness connector, antenna connector, and CD changer electrical connector (if so equipped), if previously disconnected in Step 3. Slide the radio into position in the headliner bezel opening until it snaps in place.
14) If the tractor cab is not equipped with a radio, reinstall the previously removed 9U-8263 Cover in the right hand opening in the cab headliner bezel.
15) Check for proper radio and electronic display operation.
NOTE: Because of errors with the original ECM software, all tractor parameter values related to fuel consumption may not be accurate. Complete the following steps to eliminate or minimize the errors.
19) Reset the "Current Field Totals" values
TWICE. This will "zero out" the total values for the "Current Field Totals"
and the "Last Field Totals."
- Obtain factory passwords to allow reprogramming of the ECM lifetime fuel consumption value. (You will need to provide the following: Service Tool S/N, Engine S/N, ECM S/N, Total Tattletale Count, and Reason Code.)
22) If the "Fuel Rate Scaling" factor has not been programmed, double check to make sure it is currently set at "0".
If the "Fuel Rate Scaling" factor has been programmed, reset it to "0". Then reset the "Total Fuel" consumed value to 0.67 (67%) of the existing number. Slide the 145-0145 (or 164-5767 or 171-2090) Electronic Display Gp. rearward out of the bezel opening.
8) Remove the existing 145-0141 (or 164-5765 or 171-2088) EPROM/Carrier from the display by carefully grasping the tabs at the top and bottom and removing the carrier. Do not use a screwdriver to remove the EPROM/Carrier. Damage to the display will result. Discard. (Refer to Illustration 5.)
9) Install either a new 171-2087 (English/Spanish) or 187-1600 (English/German) EPROM/Carrier.
15) Check for proper radio and electronic display
operation.
2) If the tractor cab is not equipped
with a radio, remove the 9U-8263 Cover installed in the right hand opening
in the cab headliner bezel.
Slide the 164-5767 (or 171-2090) Electronic Display Gp. rearward out of the bezel opening.
8) Remove the existing 164-5765 (or 171-2088) EPROM/Carrier from the display by carefully grasping the tabs at the top and bottom and removing the carrier. Do not use a screwdriver to remove the EPROM/Carrier. Damage to the display will result. Discard. (Refer to Illustration 5.)
9) Install either a new 171-2087 (English/Spanish) or 187-1600 (English/German) EPROM/Carrier.
15) Check for proper radio and electronic
display operation.
2) Remove the existing 145-0141 or 164-5764 EPROM/Carrier from the display by carefully grasping the tabs at the top and bottom and removing the carrier. Do not use a screwdriver to remove the EPROM/Carrier. Damage to the display will result. Discard. (Refer to Illustration 5.)
