- Transmission:
- TH48FT - E80 (S/N: FRT1-UP)
Description of Change: There is a drain hole in the flywheel housings for the 3512 Caterpillar engine that allows oil to flow back into the transmission case from the engine flywheel housing. There is a potential for a leak because there is no seal at this connection.
A bore and a seal has been added to the transmission case in the location that mates to the drain hole in the engine flywheel housing for the 3512 Caterpillar engine. This will provide a path for the oil to flow back into the transmission.
Adaptable To: The improved transmission case is effective with TH48FT - E80 (S/N: FRT257).
The rework procedure for the transmission case is adaptable to TH48FT - E80 (S/N: FRT1-256).
For older transmission cases that do not have a drain hole, the engine flywheel housing can be reworked in order to include a plug. This will ensure that there will be no leak. Use the following procedure to rework the engine flywheel housing.
Procedure to Plug Engine Flywheel Housing
- Locate drain hole (1) in the engine flywheel housing.

- Tap this hole with a 5/8-11 tap to a depth of at least 12.7 mm (0.5 inch).
- Screw a 3B-8602 Setscrew into the hole. Make sure that the setscrew is flush with the surface. The setscrew should not be above the surface.
- Remove the setscrew. Apply high strength thread lock compound 154-9731 Thread Lock Compound to the setscrew.
- Install the setscrew into the hole and tighten the setscrew.
