Introduction

This Special Instruction provides the procedure for updating to the single piece oil pan on certain D8T Track-Type Tractors and Pipelayers.

Do not attempt to disassemble or assemble this machine until you read and understand the disassembly and assembly instructions. Improper disassembly and assembly procedures could result in injury or death.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Remove the belly guards directly fore and aft of the equalizer bar, the high-speed oil change, and any other attachments connected to the oil pan. Clean out any debris that may have accumulated around the oil pan.

  2. The bottom eyelet of 218-4840 Support As (A) will need to be removed to get the new oil pan in and out of the chassis. After removing the eyelet, make this area flush. Refer to Illustration 7, Illustration 8, and Illustration 9.

  3. Remove oil gauge and guide tube (B).

  4. Disassemble the three piece oil pan and remove the oil level sensor. Clean off excess gasket from the block surface. Remove tube assembly suction (C) and bracket (D) only.

    Note: Do not disassemble the plate and tube assembly pump discharge.

  5. Put suction tube assembly (1) in oil pan (5) while oil pan (5) is out of the chassis.

  6. Apply blue RTV to gasket (7) as required to help hold the gasket in place.

  7. Lift oil pan (5) with suction line (1) inside and slide oil pan (5) back in position underneath the engine.

  8. Let oil pan (5) rest on saddle (E) as shown in Illustration 14.

  9. Insert suction tube into the sump and bolt support bracket in two places (H).

  10. After sliding oil pan (5) on to saddle (E) and the assembly of the suction bell, perform the Steps below.

  11. Assemble bolt (6) throughout oil pan (5) making sure that each bolt goes through gasket (7) and into the block.

    Tightening Sequence

  12. Hand tighten all bolts (6). Then follow the tightening sequence shown in Illustration 34 and tighten all bolts to a torque of 40 ± 5 N·m (30 ±4 lb ft) for the tightening sequence.

  13. Follow the retightening sequence shown in Illustration 35 and tighten the all bolts to a torque of 47 ± 5 N·m (35 ± 4 lb ft).

  14. Install drain plug (8A) into plug adapter (8B).

    Note: This will make drain adapter (8).

  15. Install drain adapter (8) O-ring seal (9) between drain adapter (8) and oil pan (5).

  16. Tighten bolts (10) to a torque of 105 ± 20 N·m (77 ± 15 lb ft).

  17. Insert pipe plug (11) into drain adapter (8).

  18. Reassemble high-speed oil attachment (K).

  19. Install new tube and oil level gauge (16).

  20. Paint all components after installation is complete.

  21. Install cover assembly (31) (if required) using two bolts (32), 12 nuts (33), and two washers (34).

    Note: When oil pan sound panel is used, 10 stud bolts are needed around the pan instead of bolts.

  22. Note the new fill level requirements:

    • Full Mark – 43L w/1 Filter Change

    • Add Mark – 38L w/1 Filter Change

  23. Check for leaks and install bottom guards.

  3. Disassemble the three piece oil pan and remove the oil level sensor. Clean off excess gasket from the block surface. Remove tube assembly suction (C) and bracket (D) only.

    Note: Do not disassemble the plate and tube assembly pump discharge.

  4. Put suction tube assembly (1) in oil pan (5) while oil pan (5) is out of the chassis.

  5. Apply blue RTV to gasket (7) as required to help hold the gasket in place.

  6. Lift oil pan (5) with suction line (1) inside and slide oil pan (5) back in position underneath the engine.

  7. Let oil pan (5) rest on saddle (E) as shown in Illustration 31.

  8. Insert suction tube into the sump and bolt support bracket in two places (H).

  9. After sliding oil pan (5) on to saddle (E) and the assembly of the suction bell, perform the Steps below.

  10. Assemble bolt (6) throughout oil pan (5) making sure that each bolt goes through gasket (7) and into the block.

    Tightening Sequence

  11. Hand tighten all bolts (6). Then follow the tightening sequence shown in Illustration 34 and tighten all bolts to a torque of 40 ± 5 N·m (30 ±4 lb ft) for the tightening sequence.

  12. Follow the retightening sequence shown in Illustration 35 and tighten the all bolts to a torque of 47 ± 5 N·m (35 ± 4 lb ft).

  13. Install drain plug (8A) into plug adapter (8B).

    Note: This will make drain adapter (8).

  14. Install drain adapter (8) O-ring seal (9) between drain adapter (8) and oil pan (5).

  15. Tighten bolts (10) to a torque of 105 ± 20 N·m (77 ± 15 lb ft).

  16. Insert pipe plug (11) into drain adapter (8).

  17. Reassemble oil level sensor (K) with O-Ring (24) into oil pan (5). Torque oil level sensor (K) to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  18. Reassemble high-speed oil attachment (L).

  19. Install new tube and oil level gauge (16).

  20. Paint all components after installation is complete.

  21. Install cover assembly (25) (if required) using two bolts (26), 12 nuts (27), and two washers (28).

    Note: When oil pan sound panel is used, 10 stud bolts are needed around the pan instead of bolts.

  22. Note the new fill level requirements:
