NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

  1. Thoroughly clean all of the components.

  2. Lubricate the piston and the cylinder bore with clean engine oil.

Note: The piston and connecting rod are matched to a specific cylinder. Ensure that the connecting rod and pistons are installed in the correct cylinder.

  3. Rotate the crankshaft until the connecting rod journal is at the bottom center. Lubricate the connecting rod journal with clean engine oil.

  4. Ensure that the piston assembly is correctly marked to the cylinder.

  5. Lubricate the bearing shells for the connecting rod with clean engine oil.

  6. Lubricate Tooling (A) with clean engine oil and install Tooling (A).

Note: The arrow or the "FRONT" mark that is on the top of the piston must be toward the front of the engine. Ensure that the piston rings are 120 degrees away from each other.

Note: Ensure that Tooling (A) is installed correctly and that the piston can easily slide from Tooling (A) and into the cylinder.

  7. Push the piston and the connecting rod assembly into the cylinder and onto the connecting rod journal.

Note: New torx screws must be installed.

Note: Ensure that the etched number on connecting rod bearing cap (2) matches the etched number on connecting rod.

  8. Install the cap (2) with the bearing shell onto the connecting rod journal and the new torx screws for the cap.

  9. Tighten the new torx screws to 20 N·m (14 lb ft).

Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Piston Height - Inspect" for the correct procedure on checking the height of the piston above the cylinder block.

  10. Tighten the torx screws (3) to 70 N·m (51 lb ft).

  11. Use the Tooling (B) to achieve the correct final torque.

Note: If the Tooling (B) is not used, place an index mark on each setscrew.

  12. Tighten the torx screws by 120 degrees. Refer to the insert in the illustration 1.

  13. Rotate the crankshaft in order to ensure that there is no binding.

  14. Repeat steps 6 to 13 in order to install the remaining pistons and connecting rods.

End By:

  1. Install the piston cooling jets. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston Cooling Jets - Remove and Install".

  2. Install the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Install".

  3. Install the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cylinder Head - Install".
