SUPPLEMENT: 03/30/81

SERVICE MAGAZINE, FEBRUARY 23, 1981, PAGES 4-6. In the article, "Two New Oil Filter Assemblies Available; Always Use Correct Oil Filter And Follow Caterpillar Change Intervals," a correction is necessary in the chart on page 5.

Under "Service Filter Part No.", change "8N5680" to "9N5680".

--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------

Description of Change: Two new oil filters are used in the lubrication systems for the above engines. One filter has an internal bypass valve, and the other does not.

The filter with the bypass valve is used on earlier engines that have oil filter bases without internal bypass valves. The filters without bypass valves are used on engines which have later oil filter bases with bypass valves.

The filters are of common construction, except for the bypass valve. See the illustrations. The two types of filters can not be used in place of each other.

It is important to use the correct oil filter for the engine and to follow the correct change interval.

Products of combustion, like carbon, get into the engine oil during operation. This foreign material is held in suspension in the oil until it is removed by the filter.

If the filter element becomes too "dirty" (full of foreign material) because of use, the bypass valve will open. This permits dirty oil to flow through the engine, but not through the filter. Extended use of dirty oil will cause piston rings and valves to stick (not move freely) and increased cylinder liner wear.

Comparison of the 9N5680 and 8N9586 Filter Assemblies.

Adaptable As: The 9N5680 and 8N9586 Filter Assemblies are direct replacements for the former 9L9200 and 9N5570 Filter Assemblies respectively. The 9L9200 Filter Assembly is canceled. The 9N5570 Filter Assembly is still available. The 9N5680 Filter Assembly has an internal bypass valve. It is used with earlier bases that do not have bypass valves. The 8N9586 Filter Assembly does not have an internal bypass valve. It is used on later bases which have bypass valves.

The chart shows the applications of both the 9N5680 and the 8N9586 Filter Assemblies. It also shows all other filter assemblies and bases for 1140, 1145, 1150, 1160, 3145, 3150, 3160, 3204 and 3208 Engines.
