PROBLEM
Certain 980H Medium Wheel Loaders need to be updated with new Implement, Engine and Transmission Software. This new Engine Software provides additional horsepower when the cooling fan is not at maximum speed and corrects an engine startup derate issue. The new Transmission Software allows disabling of Soft Shift. This provides optional quicker shift times on 2-1, 3-2 and 2-3 shifts. |

ACTION REQUIRED
Note: This service letter update includes the 323-2562 Transmission Software to replace the 314-8496 Transmission Software called out in the original version of this service letter. This new 323-2562 Transmission Software only includes changes for machines configured with Heavy Duty Transmission. There is no need to reapply this letter to machines that are not configurated wtih Heavy Duty Transmission. Note: For units with A8J prefix in Japan do not apply steps 1 and 2 for Group 1. The engine software is not approved for MLIT. Group 1 1. If the Impelment ECM does not have 292-1957 or higher Software the implement ECM needs to be updated with 292-1957 or higher Software. This will ensure the machine has EIMS (Engine Idle Management System) compatible Implement Software that is required for Engine Software update. If the Implement ECM has 292-1957 or higher Software proceed to step 2. NOTE: Use the following procedure if an Implement Software update is needed. Copy the configuration of the Implement ECM with ECM replacement. Flash the new Implement Software. Program the saved configuration into the Implement ECM. Verify that the Implement ECM has been configured properly. Cycle power by using the ignition switch. Perform implement calibrations. Refer to RENR8678 Testing and Adjusting, "Electrohydraulic System". Confirm that all fault codes have been cleared. 2. Flash the Engine ECM with 315-4121 Software. 3. Flash the Transmission ECM with 323-2562 Software. 4. Perform "Engagement Pressure for the Transmission Clutch - Calibrate" from 980H Powertrain Testing and Adjusting (RENR8666). 5. Perform "Fill Time for the Transmission Clutch - Calibrate" from 980H Powertrain Testing and Adjusting (RENR8666). 6. Select standard shift times (Soft Shifting) or quicker shifting times. -For standard shift times (Soft Shifting) no changes are necessary. The default setting for 'Transmission Soft Shift Enable' is Enabled in Transmission ECM Configuration. -For quicker shift times set 'Transmission Soft Shift Enable' to Disabled in Transmission ECM Configuration and set the Variable Shift Control Switch to Normal (left position, see Image). Standard shift times (Soft Shifting) are used when the Variable Shift Control Switch is set to Intermediate (middle position) or Economy (right position). Group 2 1. Flash the Transmission ECM with 323-2562 Software. 2. Perform "Engagement Pressure for the Transmission Clutch - Calibrate" from 980H Powertrain Testing and Adjusting (RENR8666). 3. Perform "Fill Time for the Transmission Clutch - Calibrate" from 980H Powertrain Testing and Adjusting (RENR8666). 4. |
