This publication includes information on maintenance for the following components:

  • Coupling

  • Clutch

  • Gearbox

  • Heat exchanger

Coupling

Two different types of couplings are used between the engine and the clutch. The type of coupling depends on the engine model.

A flexible coupling is used with the G3408 and G3412 Engines. The flexible coupling is constructed of rubber.

A torsional coupling is used with G3500 and G3606 Engines. The torsional coupling has leaf springs and the coupling is filled with oil. The combination of these two features helps to reduce torsional vibrations. This reduces stress on the driven components.

Clutch

The clutch is a pneumatic drum clutch. The clutch is actuated by air pressure. An inflatable tube is bonded to the outer rim of the clutch. Friction shoes are attached to the inside diameter of the tube. When air pressure is applied into the tube, the tube inflates. This engages the clutch by forcing the friction shoes uniformly against a drum. When the air pressure is reduced, the tube deflates. This disengages the clutch by retracting the friction shoes.

Gearbox

The gearbox is a totally enclosed gear drive. The gears are lubricated and cooled by oil. The gearbox has a low speed shaft that is driven by the engine. The rpm is increased by the gearbox. Output from the gearbox is provided by a high speed shaft that drives the compressor.

Heat Exchanger

The heat exchanger is made of many thin metal plates that are specially formed. The plates are separated by gaskets. The gaskets align in order to form piping. The plates are bolted together between two thicker outer plates.

Engine coolant and water from an external source are pumped through the heat exchanger. The different fluids are distributed on opposite sides of the plates. The fluids move through narrow passages that are formed in a pattern on the plates. Heat from the engine coolant is transferred through the plates to the cooling water. The engine coolant and the water are recirculated.
