Water Temperature Regulators

Usage:

Remove Water Temperature Regulators

1. Drain the engine coolant. Remove bolts (5) and the retainers from the water pump end.

2. Remove four bolts (4).

3. Remove two bolts (3). Remove tube (1) and the elbow as a unit.

4. Disconnect two electrical connectors (6) from transducer temperature probe located inside the flexible conduit.

5. Remove plates (7), (8) and (9) that hold the water temperature regulator housings to the oil filter housing.

6. Install tooling (A) and a hoist as shown.

7. Remove eight bolts (11) and the water temperature housings from the engine. The weight of the housing is 59 kg (130 lb).

8. Remove the two O-ring seals from the regulator housing.

9. Remove the bolts and housing (13).


Typical Example

10. Remove four water temperature regulators (14).

11. If necessary, remove valve assembly (15).

12. If necessary, remove seals (16).

Install Water Temperature Regulators

1. Install valve assembly (15). Make sure the valve assembly is flush with the surface of the housing.

2. If seals (16) were removed, use tooling (B) to install the seals in the housing. Make sure the lip of the seal is toward the inside of the housing as shown.


NOTICE

If the water temperature regulators are installed wrong, the engine will overheat.


3. Install four water temperature regulators (14) with the spring up.

4. Using tooling (A) and a hoist, position water temperature regulator housing (12). Install the bolts and housing (13) to water temperature regulator housing (12).

5. Install the two O-ring seals into the regulator housing.

6. Install eight bolts (11).

7. Install plates (7), (8) and (9).

8. Connect two electrical connectors (6).

NOTE: Check the O-ring seals for damage or wear. Replace if necessary.

9. Check for proper positioning of the O-ring seal on the of tube (1) and the gasket on elbow (2). Put clean engine oil on the seal. Install tube (1) and four bolts (4) for elbow (2).

10. Install two bolts (3) that hold the tube bracket to the block.

11. Install bolts (5) with the retainers.

12. Add engine coolant, as necessary. See the Maintenance Manual.
