Asphalt Pavers Burner Electronic Control System Caterpillar

Temperature Not High Enough

Usage:

BG-245C 4XN
System Operation Description:

The following EID codes are covered by this procedure:

  • EID 139 FMI F11 - Left Ext. Failure To Reach Temp.

  • EID 143 FMI F11 - Left Main. Failure To Reach Temp.

  • EID 147 FMI F11 - Right Ext. Failure To Reach Temp.

  • EID 151 FMI F11 - Right Main Failure To Reach Temp.

EID codes are issued for events that are not within the normal operation of the system. These events usually are not diagnosed as being a problem with any one system component. While these events are not within normal operation of the Burner Electronic Control, they may occur occasionally. If the events occur occasionally and are easily corrected, usually this is not considered to be a problem. No components need to be replaced. If these events occur frequently, then the cause of the problem should be investigated and corrected.

A "Failure To Reach Temp." EID FMI F11 diagnostic is recorded when the burner operates for 20 minutes and the temperature switch has not detected a high enough screed plate temperature. Refer to the Systems Operation, "Burner Control" modules in this manual for the correct sequence of events for the ignition cycle.

The results of this active event code are:

  • The burner diagnostic lamp, located beneath the screed walkway, is ON.

  • The burner that is associated with the EID will turn OFF. The burner will not attempt to ignite again until a 5 minute time period has passed.

  • If the burner ignites successfully and the burner reaches temperature within 20 minutes, the diagnostic lamp will turn OFF.

The possible causes of this active event code are:

  • Cold ambient air temperature.

  • The temperature switch for the involved burner is malfunctioning.

  • The flame sensor for the involved burner is malfunctioning.

  • The ECM has malfunctioned. This is unlikely.

Perform the following procedure when the screed plate will not reach the correct temperature.

Test Step 1. Check Burner Operation

This step will check the operation of the burner.

  1. Turn the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Turn the burner system switch to the BURNER position and move the burner mode switch for the involved burner from the OFF position to the AUTO position.

  1. Allow the ECM to initiate the burner ignite cycle. Ensure that there is a flame present in the burner chamber. Allow the burner to operate until the ECM turns the burner OFF. The ECM should shut down the burner when the proper screed plate temperature is reached or when the burner has operated for 20 minutes.

Expected Result:

The burner operated correctly and no diagnostic codes were activated.

Results:

  • OK - The burner is operating correctly at this time. If this EID is activated frequently, proceed to the next step. Stop.

  • NOT OK - The burner ignited and turned OFF after 20 minutes. The EID for "Failure to Reach Temp." is still active. NOTE: If the ambient air temperature is very cold, run the burner cycle several times in order to heat the screed plate before continuing to the next step. If after running the burner several times, the EID is still active, proceed to Step 2.

  • NOT OK - The burner did not ignite, however, no EID code was activated for "No Flame Det."

Repair: The flame sensor for the involved burner is malfunctioning. Replace the flame sensor.

    Stop.

Test Step 2. Measure Screed Temperature

This step should be performed immediately after the burner cycle has operated for 20 minutes and then turned OFF.

  1. Turn the key switch to the OFF position. Turn the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  1. Measure the temperature of the screed plate.

Expected Result:

The measured temperature of the screed plate is greater than 154 °C (310 °F).

Results:

  • YES - The measured temperature of the screed plate is greater than 154 °C (310 °F).

Repair: The temperature switch for the involved burner is malfunctioning. Replace the temperature switch. If it is not possible to replace the temperature switch at this time, the burner can be operated in the MANUAL mode. When operating the burner in the MANUAL mode, the operator MUST ensure that the burner ignites. In Manual mode, the fuel will continue to be sprayed into the burner chamber regardless of whether the burner has ignited or not. Replace the temperature switch at the earliest possible time.

    Stop.

  • NO - The measured temperature of the screed plate is less than 154 °C (310 °F). .

Repair: The burner system is working correctly. The screed plate must reach 154 °C (310 °F) before the temperature switch contacts will open which will signal the ECM to turn OFF the burner. Check the fuel system to ensure that enough fuel is being sprayed into the burner chamber. Check the blower operation to ensure that the blower is operating on HI speed when the burner is ON. Investigate all other possible causes in order to correct the problem. The ECM should only be suspected after all other possible causes have been investigated.

    Stop.
