Certain Remanufactured Turbochargers And Turbocharger Components Need To Be Removed From Parts Stock

NOTE: The information supplied in this service letter may not be valid after the termination date of this program. Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst.

Termination Date

January 31, 1994

Problem

Certain remanufactured turbochargers and turbocharger components need to be removed from parts stock because the compressor wheels may have been damaged during a cleaning process.

Action Required

Inspect all the remanufactured turbochargers and turbocharger components listed below. If the box containing the part is marked "CW OK", or has a date code prior to June 1992 or after September 1993 on the outside of the box, return the part to stock.

NOTE: The date code can be found on the right-hand end of the part number label on the box after the part number. (For example, the date code for October 1993 will appear as 1093 or as 10/93.)

If the part box has none of the conditions mentioned above, open the box to determine if the compressor wheel is new. Inspect the surface of the compressor wheel that the nut seats against. If this surface has a bright, freshly-machined surface the wheel is new. If this surface has a dull surface finish the wheel is reused. Do not disturb the nut for this inspection.

NOTE: Turbocharger groups can be inspected without removing the group from the box.

If you are unable to determine if the compressor wheel is new using the above inspection method, inspect the profiled edges of the compressor wheel vanes. If they have a bright, freshly-machined surface, the wheel is new.

NOTE: It will be necessary to remove the compressor cover from turbocharger groups to perform this inspection. If the compressor cover is removed, use caution when installing it to be sure it is straight so the compressor wheel is not damaged.

If inspection reveals the wheel is new, seal the box, mark the outside of the box with "DCW OK" and return the part to your stock. If the wheel surface finish is dull, remove the part from parts stock.

Submit one claim for all remanufactured turbochargers and components removed from parts stock as a result of this service letter.

Return all remanufactured turbochargers and components that are removed from parts stock and a copy of the claim to:

2. Use "PI7325" for the dealer reference number after each part number listed on the Core Credit Request/Packing List (CCR/PL). Include the warranty claim number on the CCR/PL and mark it as "Warranty".
