Schematic of the Parking Brake Solenoid |
This diagnostic code is for the Parking Brake Solenoid.
This diagnostic code is recorded when current of the solenoid is below normal. The parking brake solenoid will fail to engage the brakes when the parking brake switch is in the ON position.
Note: The diagnostic code indicator for CID 0681 FMI 05 will show "SERV CODE" only when the parking brake switch is in the OFF position.
System Response:
Note: Ensure that CID 0681 FMI 05 is on hold and that the diagnostic code indicator shows "SERV CODE". This procedure can cause new diagnostic codes to be recorded. Ignore these created problems. When the procedure is completed, clear the created diagnostic codes.
Note: A failed parking brake solenoid will NOT keep the parking brake switch from engaging the brakes. The ON/OFF pole of the parking brake switch causes the ECM to engage the brake. Then, the ECM turns off the left and right brake solenoids.
Note: The following procedures should be performed while the engine is OFF in order to ensure that the machine will not move with the parking brake switch in the OFF position.
Test Step 1. CHECK THE SOLENOID.
- Turn the key start switch to the ON position. Ensure that CID 0681 FMI 05 is on hold.
- Place the parking brake switch in the OFF position.
- Disconnect the machine harness from the parking brake solenoid.
- At the machine harness connector for the solenoid, place a jumper from contact 1 to contact 2.
- Observe the status of the diagnostic code indicator.
Expected Result:
"When the jumper is installed and the jumper is removed , SERV CODE" will turn on and off .
Results:
- YES - "When the jumper is installed and the jumper is removed , SERV CODE" turns on and off .
Repair: The solenoid has failed. Repeat this step in order to verify that the solenoid has failed. Replace the solenoid.
STOP
- NO - "When the jumper is installed and the jumper is removed , SERV CODE" does not turn on and off . Proceed to Test Step 2.
Test Step 2. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN.
- Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the machine harness connectors J1 and J2 from the ECM.
- The jumper that was used in a previous step remains.
- At machine harness connector J1, measure the resistance from contact J2-1 to J1-7 and to J2-3 .
Expected Result:
There should be less than 5.0 ohms resistance.
Results:
- OK - There is less than 5.0 ohms resistance. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 3.
- NOT OK - There is not less than 5.0 ohms resistance.
Repair: There is an open circuit in the machine harness. The open is in wire G730-PK(Pink) or 975-WH(White) of the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
STOP
Test Step 3. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE REMAINS.
- Inspect the contacts and clean the contacts of the harness connectors.
- Reconnect all harness connectors.
- Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
- Enter service mode of the Caterpillar Monitoring System and clear all inactive diagnostic codes.
- Operate the machine.
- Stop the machine and place the parking brake switch in the OFF position.
- Determine if CID 0681 FMI 05 is present.
Expected Result:
CID 0681 FMI 05 is present. "SERV CODE"is showing.
Results:
- YES - CID 0681 FMI 05 is present. "SERV CODE"is showing.
Repair: Exit this procedure and perform the diagnostic code procedure again. If the problem persists, the ECM may have failed. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership's Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. See the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".
STOP
- NO - CID 0681 FMI 05 is not present. "SERV CODE" is not showing.
Repair: The problem does not exist at this time. The initial problem was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.
