Crankcase Capacity Increased; New Dimensions For Marks On Oil Level Gauge

Usage:

3160 and 3208 Marine Engines

Description of Change: The oil capacity of the engine crankcase has been increased from twelve to fourteen quarts (11.35 to 13.24 liters) for 3160 and 3208 Marine Engines. No new parts are used for this change; the only difference is in the location of the marks on the oil level gauge.

Adaptable To: All earlier 3160 and 3208 Marine Engines. For conversion of earlier engines, a new 4N4542 Oil Level Gauge can be used if desired, or the marks can be ground off the existing gauge and new marks added according to the dimensions shown. Be sure to clean the gauge thoroughly before it is put into the engine.

APPLICATION OF MARKS: To put oil level marks on a 4N4542 Gauge for either a new engine or existing engine, use the procedure that follows:

1. Find the tilt angle of the engine as installed. Tilt angles shown in the chart as positive (+) are an indication that the front of the engine is higher than the rear.

2. Drain the engine crankcase (unless already drained), and install new oil filters. This recommendation permits a double check to be sure the gauge marks are correct.

3. Put marks on the 4N4542 Gauge at dimensions "X" and "Y" as shown in the chart. Be sure to use the correct dimensions shown for the specific tilt angle, and for the correct gauge location (RH or LH) as seen from the rear of the engine. The mark at dimension "X" is the "FULL" mark, and the mark at dimension "Y" is the "ADD" mark as shown.

4. Install the oil level gauge and fill the engine crankcase with fourteen quarts (13.24 liters) of the correct grade and type of oil as shown in the guide sent with the engine from the factory.

5. Start the engine and run until the engine temperature is normal, then stop the engine.

6. After an interval of not less than ten minutes, check the oil level. If the oil level is not at the "FULL" mark, check the dimensions used and, if necessary, the engine tilt angle.
