If Malfunction Of The Engine Fault Light In The Control Panel Of SR-4 Generators Is A Problem, A Toggle Switch Can Be Used In Its Place

Usage:

SR-4 Generators Used With 3300 And 3400 Series Engines And Equipped With A 3N8900 Control Panel

SUPPLEMENT: 01/23/80

ENGINE NEWS, JANUARY 9, 1980, PAGE 1.

In the article "If Malfunction Of The Engine Fault Light In The Control Panel Of SR-4 Generators Is A Problem, A Toggle Switch Can Be Used In Its Place," the illustration used to show the wires to be changed has the "number 3" missing. In the lower left corner of the illustration, add the number "3" to the line which extends to the right from number 26 and to the left of the ENFL light. There is a break in the line where the number "3" is to be inserted.

--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------

The purpose of the ENFL/RE (Engine Fault Light With Fault Reset) in the 3N8900 Control Panel is to activate an indicator light and a reset switch when there is an overspeed, overcrank, high coolant temperature or low oil pressure condition. In some installations, enough dust can be present to cause the reset switch to malfunction and stick open. When the switch is stuck open, engine shutdown will be actuated only while the condition is present. For example, when an engine overspeed returns to the normal speed range, the shutdown mechanism will reset if the switch is stuck open and the engine will overspeed again.

Since the indicator light function is not needed to identify a fault or possible engine failure condition, a modification can be made to install an 8N694 Switch in place of the ENFL/RE.

MODIFICATION: Disconnect or cut the wires at both sides of the ENFL/RE (Engine Fault Light With Fault Reset Function) component in the SR-4 control panel. These wires are shown as numbers 2 and 93 on the illustration.

Disconnect or cut the wires identified as numbers 3 and 92 that connect to the 3N5718 Lamp Holder. These two wires are no longer needed in the circuit logic.

Put tape around the ends of these two wires to prevent electrical shorts.

Install an 8N694 Switch Assembly (or a similar toggle-type switch) on the control panel enclosure door.

Modification to install toggle switch.

NOTE: Manual operation of this type of switch is necessary. Maintained position-contact to be closed; momentary position-contact opens.

Connect wire number 2 to terminal number 1 on the 8N694 Switch Assembly. Connect wire number 93 to terminal number 2 on the 8N694 Switch Assembly. (Switch contact should be normally closed; contact opens on operation of switch lever.)
