Conditions Which Generate This Code:

Illustration 1g01350167

This diagnostic code is associated with missing data for the retarder selection, non-engine. The illustration for the J1939 Data Link may not represent all of the connections for the components that are on machines that are covered by this manual. Refer to the electrical system schematic for your machine in order to verify the J1939 Data Link connections.

Note: This code is active and/or logged when the programmed source for transmission Retarding information is not received for 5 seconds by the transmission ECU.

Test Step 1. CHECK FOR OTHER J1939 RELATED DIAGNOSTIC CODES

If the following diagnostics codes are active or logged then resolve those codes first before attempting to resolve this code.

The Codes to look for are:

  • SPN 91 - FMI 09

  • SPN 91 - FMI 19

  • SPN 513 - FMI 09

  • SPN 513- FMI 19

  • SPN 625 - FMI 09

  • SPN 639 - FMI 09

  • SPN 639 - FMI 19

Possible Causes for this diagnostic code:

The "Transmission Retarder Input Configuration" parameter is programmed to the wrong J1939 device option.

  • Check that the correct device is selected

  • Reprogram parameter as necessary

J1939 device is disconnected from the J1939 data link

  • Check to see if the device has all connectors connected

  • Check for J1939 wiring problems between the J1939 Backbone and the device

J1939 device is not powered

  • Check for tripped circuit breaker

  • Check for blown fuse

J1939 device is inoperable

  • Device has power

  • All connectors are connected

Results:

Continue to the next test step.

Test Step 2. VERIFY THE HARDWARE AND THE SOFTWARE PART NUMBERS.

  1. Verify that the following information is correct:

    • The part number of the flash software for the Transmission ECU

    • The part number of the Transmission ECU

Note: Consult the business unit that produces the product for the correct part numbers of the flash software.

Expected Result:

All the part numbers are correct.

Results:

  • OK - All of the part numbers are correct. Proceed to Test Step 3.

  • NOT OK - All of the part numbers are not correct.

Repair: The ECU has the wrong part number or the incorrect software is installed. Replace the ECU with a module that has the correct part number. Flash the correct software. See the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Unit - Flash Program" section of this manual.

    STOP

Test Step 3. VERIFY THE PARAMETER PROGRAMMING

The parameter programming must match the vehicle system sending the retarding level information to the transmission ECU. The vehicle must be equipped with one of the following systems:

  • ·J1939 Body Controller

  • ·J1939 Cab Controller

  • ·J1939 Instrument Cluster

Results:

  • Yes - Programming matches vehicle system Proceed to Test Step 4.

  • No - Recheck programming and vehicle system documentation.

    STOP

Test Step 4. CHECK FOR SHORTS TO GROUND

  1. The disconnect switch remains in the OFF position.

  2. Disconnect the machine harness from all electronic control modules that use the J1939 Data Link.

  3. At the machine harness for the Transmission ECU, measure the resistance between contacts J2-67 and J2-68 of the J1939 Data Link and frame ground.

Expected Result:

The resistance is greater than 5000 Ohms.

Results:

  • OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 Ohms. The harness circuit resistance is correct. Proceed to Test Step 5.

  • NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5000 Ohms. The machine harness has failed.

Repair: There is a short between frame ground and the J1939 Data Link circuit in the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness. See the Testing and Adjusting, "Wiring Harness (Short Circuit) - Test" section of this manual.

    STOP

Test Step 5. CHECK THE MACHINE HARNESS FOR A SHORT TO THE +BATTERY CIRCUIT.

  1. The disconnect switch remains in the OFF position.

  2. All related electronic control modules remain disconnected from the machine harness.

  3. At the machine harness connector for the Transmission ECU, perform the checks that are listed here:

    • Measure the resistance between the connector contact J2-67 and all sources of +battery.

    • Measure the resistance between connector contact J2-68 and all sources of +battery.

Expected Result:

The resistance is greater than 5000 Ohms.

Results:

  • OK - The harness circuit resistance is correct. Proceed to Test Step 6.

  • NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5000 Ohms. The machine harness has failed.

Repair: There is a short between the +battery circuit and the circuits of the J1939 Data Link circuit in the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness. See the Testing and Adjusting, "Wiring Harness (Short Circuit) - Test" section of this manual.

    STOP

Test Step 6. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE REMAINS.

  1. Inspect the harness connectors. Clean the contacts of the harness connectors and check the wires for damage to the insulation that is caused by excessive heat, battery acid, or chafing.

  2. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the circuit.

  3. Reconnect all harness connectors. Make sure that the harness connectors are fully seated and that the clips for each connector are fastened.

  4. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  5. Operate the vehicle.

  6. Check the status of the SPN 513 FMI 9.

Expected Result:

The SPN 513 FMI 9 is active.

Results:

  • YES - The SPN 1716 FMI 9 is active. The diagnostic trouble code has not been corrected.

Repair: Check the circuit again. It is unlikely that the ECU has failed. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the cause of the diagnostic trouble code is not found, replace the ECU. Prior to replacing an ECU, always contact your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Unit - Replace".

    STOP

  • NO - The SPN 1716 FMI 9 is not active. The diagnostic trouble code does not exist at this time. The initial diagnostic trouble code was probably caused by a poor electrical connection at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal vehicle operation.

    STOP
