This diagnostic code is recorded when the data is not available on the Retarder Selection, non-engineJ1939 Data Link. The data link control system for the transmission retarder sends retarding level commands to the transmission ECU over the J1939 data link instead of hard wired switches or a PWM sensor. This code is active and/or logged when the programmed source for transmission retarding information is sending error messages instead of retarder level information to the transmission ECU for more than 5 seconds. Diagnostic code SPN 1716 - FMI 09 is similar and may also be logged or active.
The data link is not the cause of this diagnostic trouble code.
Note: The illustration for the J1939 Data Link may not represent all the connections for the components that are covered by this manual. Refer to the electrical system schematic for your machine in order to verify the J1939 Data Link connections.
The possible causes of the diagnostic trouble code are listed:
· The J1939 device is partially disabled
- Selected check to see if the device has all connectors connected
- Check that device has power
- Check for wiring issues from operator inputs (switches) to the Device
- Service device according to supplier literature
Note: The problem causing this code is either data link wiring related or vehicle power related. If any of the following diagnostic codes are active or are logged with similar time stamps:
- SPN 91 - FMI 09
- SPN 91 - FMI 19
- SPN 525 - FMI 09
- SPN 639 - FMI 09
- SPN 639 - FMI 14
Test Step 1. VERIFY THE HARDWARE AND THE SOFTWARE PART NUMBERS.
- Verify that this is the only active diagnostic code:
The diagnostic may be active along with other active or logged codes for J1939 related information. If other codes for J1939 related are found, check the J1939 circuit. If no other codes are active or logged proceed to Verify the Parameter Programming.
- Verify the Parameter Programming
The parameter programming must match the vehicle system sending the retarding level information to the transmission ECU. The vehicle must be equipped with one of the following systems.
- · J1939 Body Controller
- · J1939 Cab Controller
- · J1939 Instrument Cluster
Expected Result:
Programming matches vehicle system
Results:
- OK - All of the information is correct. Proceed to Test Step 3.
- NOT OK - programming does not match required vehicle system.
Repair: Check programming and vehicle system documentation. Change programming and vehicle system documentation to match required vehicle specifications.
STOP
Test Step 2. VERIFY THAT DATA LINK BASED RETARDER CONTROL SYSTEM IS OPERATIONAL
Check the other systems on the vehicle for similar active or logged diagnostics. Similar diagnostics on other systems report to the operator that the vehicle system is not broadcasting the required information to the entire chassis.
Results:
- YES - Continue to Test Step 3
- NO - Only the transmission is expecting information from this system. Proceed to Test Step 3
Test Step 3.
Verify that the System is Connected to the J1939 Data Link
- Connector tight
- No broken wires
Results:
- OK - There are broken wires and loose connections in the system
Repair: Fix wires and connections . RETEST
STOP
- NO - Proceed to Test Step 4
Test Step 4.
Verify that That the System is Powered
- Check fuses/circuit breakers
- Power cable connected
Expected Result:
System off line, blown fuse
Results:
- YES - Replace fuse, rest breaker, service/replace broken system
STOP
- NO - Repeat the entire procedure. Proceed to Test Step 1.
