CAN Data Link
The CAN data link consists of internal ECM circuits and a twisted pair of wires within the wire harness. The bi-directional CAN data link allows the ECM to receive and send information.
CAN A Data Link
CAN A is an SAE J1939 network. CAN A utilizes a bus network topology. All of the devices in the network share a three-wire connection. These wires allow each device to communicate with other devices in the network. A CAN communication network consists of a single backbone (bus) with multiple branches (nodes) of the bus.
Cat Data Link (CDL) is required for CAN A to communicate with the following devices:
- Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool
- ECMs
- Instrument clusters
- Any other devices utilizing CAN A protocol
Note: CAN A is not used to broadcast diagnostic information.
