Correct Power Connection Prevents Damage To Diagnostic Service Tools {0651}

Usage:

It is necessary that some Caterpillar diagnostic service tools be connected to the machine battery to get power. An example is the 6V2100 Multitach.

To prevent damage to these diagnostic service tools three recommendations follow.

1. Always connect one power lead to the machine frame. Connect the other power lead to the battery terminal not connected to the machine frame. See Illustration 1.

2. Use only the 5P7360 Tachometer Generator with diagnostic service tools that get power from the machine battery.

3. Do not let the metal end of magnetic input cables contact the machine frame during operation.

6V2100 Multitachs assembled after May 1, 1981 have fuses for circuit protection. 6V2100 Multitachs assembled before May 1, 1981 do not have fuses to give protection to the electrical circuits. It is necessary to open the multitach to find out if your multitach has these fuses. These fuses are soldered to each lead of the power connector as shown in Illustration 2. Special Instruction, Form SEHS7807-01 gives the information necessary for correct power connections, fuse installation, fuse replacement and information to repair damaged circuits.
